The Sister Who Pushed Me, The Fate That Swallowed Her Chapter 10

The Sister Who Pushed Me, The Fate That Swallowed Her Chapter 10

There was nothing left to say.

No matter how many chances she got, she wanted everything and gave nothing. She didn’t know how to play fair. She never had.

“I’m your older sister. Stop talking down to me! I said get me out of here! What are you going to tell Mom and Dad if you let me die?”

“You stabbed me to death and didn’t worry about Mom and Dad then. All I’m doing is refusing to save someone who chose this. I’ve got nothing to feel guilty about.”

My dear Sloane. Even now, eyeless, broken, begging, she couldn’t stop giving orders.

She would never learn that choices came with a price.

I just didn’t know if she’d get another one after this one got her killed.

I was done letting Sloane drag me down. I cut the call.

Then I blocked her frequency.

Gideon came back from the training grounds around noon.

He fed our daughter, then settled beside me with her tucked in his arms. He kept sneaking looks at me.

“Just say it.”

I looped my arms around his neck and leaned into him.

“Sloane called. Derek took her eyes. She wants me to save her.”

He kissed my forehead.

The softness between us vanished. I let out a dry laugh.

My dear Sloane. She’d gone straight to Gideon too.

Gideon read my face and straightened up fast.

“I’ll file it with the Federation. Proper channels: approval, investigation, everything by the book.” His tone was careful. Measured.

I wasn’t happy about it. But I understood.

So I swallowed it.

If she made it back alive, I’d deal with her myself. She’d never learn to stop. And I couldn’t spend the rest of

my life looking over my shoulder.

“When do you leave?”

“The review takes a month; victim assessment, deciding whether to intervene. After that, tracking Derek’s signal could take anywhere from a week to two or three months. He’s good at disappearing.”

He said all of this with a perfectly straight face.

If I didn’t already know what this man was capable of, his serious act might’ve actually worked.

“Of course. By the book.” I smiled up at him, sweet as anything.

I just hoped my dear Sloane could hold on long enough for the Alliance to find her.

Four months later, the paperwork finally cleared.

Gideon took his soldiers and went after Derek.

Sloane hadn’t called again in all that time. We had no real information. But knowing Sloane, things had probably gone as badly as they could.

So I wasn’t too worried about Gideon.

The only problem was that Gideon didn’t trust me to manage alone. So he sent Enoch.

“General Rourke, you have my word. No strays getting near my lady while you’re gone.”

Enoch stood beneath the starship with his chest puffed out, looking absurdly sincere.

They were staring each other down like rival generals before a siege. Over me. I wanted to disappear.

These were two of the most important men in the Alliance. And they had zero shame.

Every eye in the crowd was on us. I curled my toes so hard inside my shoes I nearly punched through the

soles.

The goodbye ended before I died of embarrassment.

Enoch brought me to his estate. The place looked like something out of a fairy tale.

Flowers everywhere. Gardens, pools, play areas, everything designed for comfort.

I spent my days playing with my daughter and a little white wolf cub.

Yes, I had another child. A white wolf, just like his father.

But where Gideon was all dignity and authority, my son had the coordination of a golden retriever puppy. He

tripped over his own paws if he ran too fast.

Even Gideon had a hard time wrangling him.

Enoch, on the other hand, adored him.

Where Gideon was steady and restrained, Enoch was the opposite. He was romance personified. Every single

day, he had something new waiting for me.

I still hadnt agreed to take him as a guardian–mate. But my little wolf was already calling him Dad.

When Gideon got back, that fox was going to lose his legs.

Gideon wrapped up the campaign in half a month.

Derek, the most wanted pirate in the Alliance, was brought back to Silverpine in chains.

Enoch took me to meet the ship. When I saw Derek, something was wrong. The madness, the arrogance, all

of it was gone.

“What happened to him?” I pressed close to Gideon.

I looked past Derek, scanning the crowd. No sign of Sloane.

Gideon pulled me into his arms and buried his face in my hair. He didn’t care who was watching.

I pushed at his chest, and he finally pulled back.

“She was dead before we got there. Derek killed her himself, bit her to death. He’s been asking to die ever

since. The Alliance is executing him in three days.”

My chest went hollow.

Even without Sloane’s interference in my last life, I probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer with Derek.

Sloane moved too fast. She always did. And this time, it cost her everything, even a second chance.

Maybe somewhere, in some other universe, she’d get another shot.

If she did, I hoped she’d finally choose differently.

As for me?

I was staying right here. And I was going to enjoy every single day of it.
