The Sister I Raised Took My Bed And My Man Chapter 09

The Sister I Raised Took My Bed And My Man Chapter 09

After that whole ugly spectacle, I went to meet

Chloe

She led me into a private booth at the restaurant and made a grand introduction

Leo Hartwell. My classmate from my Singapore graduate program. He’s in architecture.”

Leo stood up. He was tall, wearing a white buttondown with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. His eyes crinkled at the corners when he smiled

He reached out his hand. Elena Vance. I’ve heard

lot about you.”

Halfway through dinner, Chloe took a phone call, announced with theatrical distress that a pipe had burst at her shop, and promptly disappeared. Leo and

were left alone

He didn’t force the conversation. He just refilled my tea, said a few things here and there about the work

he was doing

He told me he was converting those old

warehouses in the south district. He wanted to turn

them into a community arts center. A place where seniors and kids from the neighborhood could spend

time

The meal stretched longer than I expected. We

drifted from Singapore’s monsoon season to the old

streets back home

He said he grew up a couple blocks from Magnolia

Lane. Two streets over from Chloe’s shop

We compared addresses and realized we’d gone to the same elementary school. He was two grades above

  1. me

That’s why you looked familiar,he said. Did you used to wear your hair in two braids? Every afternoon you stood at the school gates waiting for

girl a lot smaller than you.”

I froze

That was Ivy

She was in first grade. I was in fifth. I waited at the gate every day because I was afraid of her crossing the

street alone

You always wore your uniform pin crooked,he

added

How do you know that?”

didn’t answer

He just smiled and

After dinner, he walked me to my front door. He stood there under the porch light and said, Tonight

was really nice. If you’re open to it, I’d like to take you

out next time. Just the two of us. No Chloe.”

I looked up and met his eyes. They were warm

and unguarded

I smiled. Okay.”

After that, everything unfolded the way it was

supposed to

Leo wasn’t like Julian

He never said things like let me do this for you.”

He just quietly handled the things I hadn’t even

thought of yet and stepped back before I could feel the

weight of it

Life kept moving

The company found its rhythm. New projects took

root. I found my own pace again

News about Julian and Ivy still leaked through from

Chloe now and then

They split up, eventually

Julian quit his firm. His office salary couldn’t cover his expenses anymore. He fell two months behind on

rent. Marcus eventually threw him a construction gig. The pay was better, but the work was brutal. Out in the

elements all day, covered in grime

He didn’t have a choice

Before he quit, he went by Chloe’s shop looking for information about me. She didn’t give him any

Ivy was living alone at Grandma’s farmhouse. She picked up odd jobs around Millbrook, but her heart was worse than before. Heavy work was out of the question

Olivia told me sometimes she’d sit in the yard by herself on that old stone bench we used to share as

kids. She’d sit there all afternoon

She still talks about you,Olivia said on the phone. She says the biggest regret of her life was telling you in the flower shop that you were the person she hated most growing up.”

She said it wasn’t true. She just wanted so badly to prove she wasn’t a piece of nothing who couldn’t survive without you.”

I didn’t say anything for a moment

Some debts can’t be wiped clean with an apology

The last time I saw Julian was somewhere I never

expected

Leo took me to see his new project. The old warehouse redevelopment in the south district

He was walking me through the space, pointing out

the exposed steel beams and red brick walls, explaining his vision. I was standing on the secondfloor platform looking down when I spotted a familiar figure

Julian was in work clothes, a hard hat pulled low. He was talking with one of the construction leads

He’d lost weight. His eyes were sunken. But he looked steadier than the last time I’d seen him

There was gray creeping out from under the hard hat at his temples. His shoulders had the slightest stoop

Leo followed my gaze. You know him?”

Someone I used to know.”

Julian looked up and saw me

He paused. Then he pulled off his gloves and nodded in my direction

I nodded back

He didn’t walk over. He just stood there, watching

me from a distance for a long moment

Then he tugged his gloves back on, turned around, and disappeared into the site

Leo waited beside me until the last trace of him

was gone. Ready to go?”

The dusk light was bleeding through the

halfdemolished roof, turning the sawdust on the floor

to gold

He held out his hand. Let’s go home.”

I took it. I nodded

I used to think loving someone meant betting everything you had

used to think love was an allornothing gamble. Like pushing every last chip onto one bet. You win, you get forever. You lose, you walk away empty

But the right person never makes you sit down at the table at all. They just pull up beside you, take your hand, and walk the same way you’re already headed

So I’m not afraid anymore

There’s a long road ahead

I’ll take my time
