I woke up in Leith’s arms.

I was clean, dressed in pajamas, and tucked against his chest.

Memories from the night before flooded back.

Leith on his knees.

Kissing me again and again, doing everything he could to please me.

My face burned.

The moment I shifted, Leith woke up and tightened his arms around me.

I slapped his hand.

“Loosen up. I can’t breathe!”

Only then did he ease his grip.

His phone suddenly rang.

He got up to answer it, and I heard Tova’s voice through the speaker.

Leith looked down at me, opened the basement door, and stepped outside.

He was supposed to like Tova. So why had he done all of that with me?

Then I spotted a key nearby.

He must have left it behind in his rush to answer the call.

Hope surged through me.

I grabbed it, unlocked the chain around my ankle, and threw on the first thing I could find.

Then I ran for the basement door.

I had almost reached it when Leith walked back in.

I stumbled backward until I hit the table.

His face was cold as he came toward me.

Panic took over. I snatched the ashtray off the table and swung it at his head.

Blood ran down Leith’s cheek as he stumbled back, one hand flying to the wound.

I bolted for the door, but just as I reached it, his thoughts broke through.

[She doesn’t want me.]

I looked back.

Leith was crying.

I couldn’t bear the look in his eyes.

So I turned and kept running.

In the garage, I climbed into a car and reached for the ignition.

Then the comments appeared.

[Oh my God, he’s bleeding so much!]

[He looks like he’s about to pass out.]

[He isn’t going to die down there, is he?!]

My heart clenched.

In the end, I called Corbett.
