At ten that night, my best friend invited me to The Copper Lantern.

I desperately needed a distraction.

I changed into a tight black miniskirt, did full glam, and headed for the door.

The comments immediately lit up.

[Here she goes again, dressing like that to seduce the male lead.]

[Please. He doesn’t want a trashy woman like her. He likes the sweet, innocent heroine.]

[Exactly! Every time the villainess dresses like this, he takes one look and runs away. She disgusts him.]

The more I thought about it, the more believable it sounded.

Whenever I wore something sexy around Leith, he either refused to look up or glanced at me once and disappeared into his room.

I would follow him and knock on the locked door.

“Is the outfit really that bad?”

“I get stared at every time I wear this out!”

“So what do you like?”

“Why won’t you answer me?!”

“I’m seriously getting mad!”

Leith would eventually open the door and give me the most exhausted look imaginable.

He couldn’t speak.

I always seemed to forget that.

“What about that preppy skirt and cardigan I wore yesterday?” I would keep going. “Or the red dress from the day before?”

How had I missed something so obvious?

He didn’t like me.

Nothing I wore was ever going to change that.

I quietly slipped into the hallway. Just as I passed Leith’s room, his door opened.

He stared at me for several seconds.

Then I heard his thoughts.

[Why is she dressed like that again?]

As if everything I wore had to be for him.

I said nothing and hurried downstairs before he could keep looking at me like that.

At the bar, I had barely sat down beside my friend when Elspeth texted me.

[You snuck out this late AGAIN? How many times have I told you it isn’t safe? Get home. NOW. Don’t make me come drag you out of that bar myself.]

I stared at the message.

Elspeth had already been asleep when I left.

How did she even know I was gone?

I didn’t have time to figure it out.

Ignoring my sister was never worth the consequences.

I apologized to my friend and rushed home.

Elspeth was waiting in the living room.

She tore into me the second I walked through the door.

Halfway through the lecture, I looked up.

Leith stood behind the railing on the second floor, watching me in silence.
