The Sign Language He Faked, The Family He Hid Chapter 07

After my attorney took steps to preserve the marital assets, the payments Grant had made to Camille quickly

came to light.

They covered the hospital bills from Stella’s birth.

They paid for the private postpartum retreat.

They covered the apartment where Camille and Stella had been living.

They also paid for three years of Stella’s health insurance, preschool tuition, and birthday parties.

There was even a complete set of fabricated documents supporting Camille’s supposed marriage abroad.

Over three years, Grant had transferred more than $650,000 to Camille.

Half of that money had come from marital assets.

Mom and my brother had known about every arrangement.

They had even used a family group chat that excluded me to coordinate every lie.

The day Camille gave birth, Mom wrote:

Mom: [Elise just had surgery. Grant, don’t stay too long or she’ll get suspicious.]

When Stella first called him Daddy, my brother sent the video to the group.

Grant replied: [Don’t let Elise find out yet.]

Grant replied: [Once she accepts Stella as our goddaughter, we’ll gradually change what Stella calls me.]

Before my most recent activation appointment, Mom had written:

Mom: [Put it off a few more days.]

Mom: [At least wait until Stella has called you Uncle Grant in public. If Elise gets her hearing back before that, she’ll expose everything.]

I gave all of the messages to my attorney.

I kept Stella’s photos and identifying information private.

I made public only the fact that four adults had taken part in deceiving me.

As soon as Mom found out, she came to my apartment with my brother.

Her eyes were already red when she walked in.

“Elise, Camille’s parents asked me to look after her before they died.”

“She was pregnant and had no family left.”

“I couldn’t just stand by and watch her be left with nowhere to turn.”

“What about me?”

“I’m your daughter.”

“I got into that crash because of their affair, and I lost my hearing.”

“How could you stand by and watch them lie to me for three years?”

Mom choked up and couldn’t answer.

My brother still tried to defend them.

“You had a husband and a home. Grant was there taking care of you.”

“Camille was hiding in another city with Stella. Stella couldn’t even call her own father Daddy in public.”

“We just thought we owed Camille a little more.”

Again, it was about making it up to Camille.

To compensate her, they had been willing to take away my chances of getting my hearing back.

They had disguised a real father–daughter relationship as a godparent relationship.

They had even put me in front of a camera and made me personally vouch for the lie that none of them had ever betrayed me.

I opened the door.

“You’ve spent three years making it up to her.”

“If

you want to keep doing it, use your own time, your own love, and your own money.”

“Stop taking it from me.”

Mom grabbed my hand.

“Are you really going to take legal action against everyone?”

“At least withdraw the complaint against the hospital.”

“If this gets any bigger, it’ll hurt your brother too.”

I pulled my hand away.

“When you made those decisions, none of you ever worried about how they would affect me.”

“You don’t need to start worrying on my behalf now.”

After they left, Camille came by with Stella.

Stella stood in the doorway, still wearing the bracelet I had fastened around her wrist myself.

She looked up at me.

“Are you really Daddy’s wife?”

I crouched down in front of her.

“I was.”

“Then why isn’t Mommy?”

Camille went pale and immediately tried to pull her away.

I didn’t answer on behalf of any of the adults.

I only spoke to Stella.

“This isn’t your fault.”

“You don’t have to apologize for what the grown–ups did.”

Stella nodded, though I wasn’t sure how much she understood.

Camille asked through her tears.

“If you know Stella is innocent, why can’t you just give her what she wants?”

“She’s already three.”

“All she wants is to live with her mommy and daddy.”

I stood up.

“Then Grant should take responsibility as her father.”

“But I don’t have to stay his wife.”

“Camille, Stella needing her father doesn’t mean I owe you my marriage.”

Camille finally had nothing to say.

After everything became public, the hospital opened a formal internal investigation.

The investigation found that I had remained fully capable of understanding my situation and making my own

medical decisions the entire time.

Grant, however, had repeatedly claimed that I was emotionally unstable and at risk of self–harm so he could decline treatment on my behalf.

The staff had relied far too heavily on a family member to interpret for me.

They had failed to give me an independent way to confirm treatment decisions in writing, and they had failed to verify my wishes directly with me.

The hospital issued a formal apology.

The staff involved were disciplined.

From then on, every decision about my treatment had to come directly from me.
