The Sign Language He Faked, The Family He Hid Chapter 04

Some of the other parents posted footage from Stella’s preschool family performance online.

In the video, Grant held Stella through the performance while she openly called him Daddy. Camille stood off to the side taking pictures of them.

The three of them looked so natural together that anyone would have taken them for a real family.

Before long, people dug up the cheating scandal from three years earlier.

Questions started piling up. Why had Camille never left the country? Who was Stella’s real father? And what did that say about Grant’s supposed devotion to the deaf wife he’d spent three years caring for?

That same day, Grant, Mom, and my brother came to me with a prepared sign-language statement.

Their story hadn’t changed.

Camille really had left the country three years ago. Stella was supposedly the daughter she’d had with her ex-husband overseas.

Grant had only attended the preschool performance as Stella’s godfather.

The video circulating online had been maliciously edited by people trying to destroy our marriage.

They wanted me to use Grant’s official social-media account to go live and set the record straight.

The script they gave me contained only three lines.

[Camille Dawson used to be my best friend.]

[The child is innocent. Please stop attacking her.]

[Grant is only helping Camille and Stella out of a sense of responsibility.]

Right in front of me, my brother gave the crew their instructions.

“Only keep Grant’s mic live.”

“She’ll sign. Grant will follow the prepared statement when he interprets.”

Mom added her own instructions.

“She can’t hear what the audience actually hears.”

“As long as she signs those lines, everyone watching will believe it.”

Grant came over to me and signed gently.

[We’re just protecting a three-year-old.]

[Once this is over, everything will go back to normal.]

The livestream began.

Following the script they’d given me, I signed the first line.

[Camille Dawson used to be my best friend.]

Grant sat beside me and addressed the audience.

“Elise says she knew Camille was pregnant three years ago.”

“It was only with her consent that we became Stella’s godparents.”

I continued signing.

[The child is innocent. Please stop attacking her.]

But Grant told the audience something entirely different.

“Elise wants everyone to know there’s been a misunderstanding.”

“I never betrayed our marriage. Everything involving Camille and Stella was done with her full knowledge and approval.”

I listened as Grant passed off every one of his lies as my own.

The captions my brother had prepared in advance appeared on-screen at the same time.

Gradually, the skepticism in the live chat turned into apologies.

People praised Grant as an exceptionally devoted husband for spending three years caring for his deaf wife.

Others accused people online of meddling in someone else’s marriage and nearly destroying an innocent family.

Off-camera, Camille held Stella in her arms and asked quietly.

“After the livestream, can she finally call you Daddy in public?”

Grant assumed I couldn’t hear him.

“In public, have her call me Uncle Grant for now.”

“Once this blows over, we won’t have to hide anymore.”

As the livestream drew to a close, Grant took my hand and signed to me.

[Thank you for trusting me.]

Then he turned to Camille and lowered his voice.

“Move back in with Stella tomorrow.”

The crew was getting ready to end the livestream when I raised my hand, signaling that I had one last thing to say.

Out of habit, Grant immediately interpreted for me.

“Elise says she’ll always consider Camille and Stella part of her family.”

I hadn’t signed a single word.

Instead, I reached over, took the microphone in front of him, and spoke clearly.

“Grant Mercer, you got every single word wrong.”

The room went dead silent.

Mom shot to her feet.

My brother lunged toward the control station, trying to cut the livestream.

Camille tightened her arms around Stella and froze just outside the camera frame.

Grant stared at me, then forced out the words.

“Elise… you can hear?”
