On the other end of the line, I heard a sharp, angry intake of breath.

Clearly, my father and Julian were both listening.

My father seemed about to say something else.

I cut him off.

“Enough. I’m hanging up. I’m about to meet with the SEC. Unlike you, who have nothing left but an old house in Washington and a pile of outdated titles, I don’t have that kind of free time.”

I ended the call and looked out the window at snowy New Haven.

The whole thing was absurd.

But I felt almost nothing.

The Davises only said they regretted it, that they loved me, because I had reached a place they could no longer touch.

They kept saying they loved me, but they never once asked if law school was hard. They never asked if I was sleeping during all those nights I spent building my company.

Their logic had never changed.

So now, no matter what posture they adopted, it meant nothing to me.

As I was thinking, the doorbell to my apartment rang.

I went to open it.

Liam and Noah stood outside with their suitcases, while Isabella held a huge bag of snacks and raised an eyebrow at me.

“Chloe, what are you spacing out for?” she said. “Hurry up. If we’re any later, we’ll miss our flight to Bali.”

She shoved the bag of snacks into my arms.

It had the logo of my golden retriever’s favorite brand on it.

“For the gentleman in your apartment. That should last him the week.”

Looking at them, I couldn’t help but smile.

“Noah, you tell her,” Liam said, leaning against the doorframe. “You’re not getting out of the trip this year.”

I walked over, took the snacks, and accepted the itinerary they handed me.

In the end, the Davis family had taught me one thing.
