The Risk Form I Signed Alone, The Wedding I Called Off Chapter 05

The Risk Form I Signed Alone, The Wedding I Called Off Chapter 05

The day of my second surgery, Bryce stood at the end of the hallway. He was holding the repaired

cassette recorder.

As the nurses wheeled me toward the operating room, he rushed forward. “Elara.”

Sasha blocked him. He held up the recorder. “It’s fixed. Your grandmother’s voice is still on it.”

I looked at him. He was clinging to a final thread. “Let me play it for you. Please.”

I shook my head. All the color drained from his face.

I typed. No need. I have backups.

It was the truth. After my grandmother passed, I’d saved three copies. The recording was never lost.

Bryce was the thing that got lost.

He understood. His hand dropped slowly to his side.

The OR doors closed. I shut my eyes.

When I woke up, the surgeon said it went well. Follow–up treatment would be necessary. I nodded.

Bryce came by many times after that. Flowers. Soup. Letters. Sasha blocked every single one.

On the third day, Hazel showed up. She stood at the door to my room, wearing a mask. Sasha blocked her path. “What do you want?”

Hazel’s voice was tiny. “I came to apologize.”

Sasha said, “You don’t need to come inside to apologize. Kneel right here.”

Hazel’s face stiffened. “I honestly didn’t know Elara was this sick.”

My mom stepped out of the room. “You didn’t know she was sick, but you definitely knew she was Bryce’s fiancée. Right?”

Hazel’s eyes reddened. “Bryce and I aren’t what you think.”

Sasha laughed. “Then what are you? The girl who has another woman’s fiancé read to her at midnight? The girl who uses another woman’s vows on a livestream? The girl who takes her meds and destroys her family’s last heirloom?”

“What exactly are you?”

Hazel suddenly raised her voice. “I have depression!”

Sasha’s voice went cold. “Then get treatment. Stop helping yourself to someone else’s man.‘

People in the hallway started looking. Hazel’s face flushed bright red. She suddenly wailed, “But

Bryce needs me too! He says being with Elara is exhausting!”

“She’s too sensitive. She feeds too much. He told me talking to me is easy.”

The hallway went silent. Bryce stepped off the elevator just then. He heard it.

Hazel spotted him and lunged toward him like he was a lifeline. “Bryce, did I say anything wrong? Isn’t that what you used to tell me?”

Bryce’s face was ashen. He walked closer. “I said those things.”

My mom swayed on her feet. My dad’s fists clenched. Bryce looked into the room at me. “But I was a complete asshole.”

Hazel froze.

Bryce said, one word at a time, “Elara isn’t sensitive.”

“I made her feel like she wasn’t safe. She was never asking for too much. I took away the things she

should’ve had all along.”

Tears slid down Hazel’s face. “What about me?”

Bryce looked at her. “You’re an adult. Your insomnia, your show, your loneliness–none of it was a

reason for me to hurt her.”

Hazel let out a shaky laugh. “Now you play the saint? Tell me you never had feelings for me.”

Bryce didn’t deny it. “I did. But I never should’ve dragged the past into the present.”

Hazel suddenly yanked out her phone. “You think if you apologize now, she’ll forgive you? I’ll tell you something. She recorded everything. She’s been planning to destroy us.”

Sasha snatched the phone out of her hand. The screen was still live. Hazel had been streaming the

whole time.

Bold, centered at the top of the screen: [Apologizing to My Ex’s Fiancée.]

The chat was detonating. [This girl is peak toxic.]

[Did she just admit Bryce called his fiancée annoying?]

[Ex sleep–aid streams, current girlfriend hospitalized. This is premium drama.]

Hazel lunged for the phone. “Turn it off!”

Bryce reached over and killed the livestream. Too late. The screen recordings were already spreading.

hat night, it blew up everywhere.

Hazel fired off a late–night statement. She said I was exploiting my illness for sympathy. She called herself a victim. She said Bryce was just being kind. She claimed I’d wanted out of the wedding all along and was using her as an excuse.

Sasha was shaking with rage. “She’s still trying to spin this?”

Ten minutes later, Sasha posted a nine–image grid. Screenshots of Hazel’s late–night messages to Bryce. The photo of Hazel cradling my pill bottle.

The clip of Hazel saying on stream, The recorder Bryce gave me has such storytelling energy. And one final screenshot. A message Hazel sent to her assistant.

[When I ask him if he wrote those vows for me, he won’t correct me in front of everyone.]

[He can’t stand seeing me cry. Elara Vance means nothing. She’s about to lose her voice entirely.]

The comments detonated.

[This isn’t drama. This is straight–up evil.]

[She knew. She knew everything.]

[A woman begs her fiancé to come home before surgery and he’s reading vows to his ex?]

[Depression isn’t a free pass to be the other woman.]

Hazel tried to pivot.

[She used a burner account to seed new narratives.]

[Is she even really sick?]

[Using cancer for clout is a new low.]

Sasha posted the IP trace. Same address as Hazel’s studio.

The platform released an official statement. Main account: banned. Brand deals: terminated.

Contract breach penalties: enforced.

Hazel called Bryce. He didn’t answer. She messaged me. [Are you happy now?]

I sent her my one and only reply. [You borrowed a voice that wasn’t yours. It’s time to give it back.]

Then I blocked her.

I lay in my hospital bed. Sasha asked me, “Feel good?“.

I thought about it. I typed. [A little.]

But mostly I was tired. Bryce and Hazel were toxic and got what they deserved. But my illness didn’t magically vanish just because they’d been exposed. My voice wouldn’t instantly return because they’d been punished. Right now, I just wanted to survive. To really live.
