The Ring I Designed, The Finger She Wore It On Chapter 05

The Ring I Designed, The Finger She Wore It On Chapter 05

When Grant came home, the first thing he saw was the document on the table.

He didn’t turn on the lights. He went straight to the last page.

“At least she did what I told her.”

Then he saw the title and stopped.

It wasn’t the proxy.

It was the divorce agreement.

Half the study had been cleared out.

My books, clothes, and documents were all gone.

Grant called me, but all he got was an automated recording.

Camille followed him into the room.

“Vivian’s probably just trying to scare you. Go after her and smooth things over.”

“She won’t leave.”

Grant sounded as though he were trying to convince himself.

“She doesn’t have a job or any income of her own. Where could she even go?”

He opened the bedroom door and saw the box on the nightstand.

My wedding ring was on top.

Underneath it was the ultrasound image.

Grant held the image for a long time without saying anything.

“What is this?”

Camille’s expression shifted.

“It looks like an ultrasound.”

“She was pregnant?”

His voice came out rough.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Camille looked away.

“I think she was going to tell you at the gala. Then you said she wasn’t ready to be a mother. Maybe she was afraid to bring it up after that.”

Grant’s head snapped up.

“You knew?”

“I only guessed.”

His phone suddenly rang.

The attorney said, “Mr. Calloway, Ms. Ward has revoked your proxy to vote her shares. From now on, any major corporate action that needs those votes will require Ms. Ward to cast them herself.”

“Put her on the phone.”

“Ms. Ward has left the country. I’m handling all matters for her.”

“When is she coming back?”

The attorney paused.

“She has no plans to return.”

Grant ended the call and only then noticed another hospital form at the bottom of the box.

The diagnosis was pregnancy loss.

The date was yesterday.

His hand tightened around the paper.

“Did she call me yesterday?”

“Grant, don’t do this. If she didn’t tell you, maybe she wasn’t even sure she wanted the baby.”

He turned to Camille with an icy stare.

“She asked me to stay.”

Yesterday afternoon, I’d been pale when I grabbed his sleeve.

He’d told me not to compete for his attention like that.

Grant grabbed his car keys.

Camille hurried after him.

“Where are you going?”

The hospital.”

“It’s already happened. What good is going there now?”

He stopped.

A few seconds later, he pushed Camille away.

“At the launch, did you deliberately tamper with the credits on her mother’s manuscript?”

“I didn’t. That was an editor’s mistake.”

“What about the text?”

He held up his phone.

The chat window I’d left open on the computer was still up.

[Being his wife is just a role. I’m the exception.]

All the color drained from Camille’s face.

“I just wanted her to stop coming after me.”

“You knew she was pregnant, and you still went out of your way to provoke her?”

“Grant, weren’t you the one who said she was emotionally unstable?”

He stared at her for a long time.

Camille wrapped both hands around his arm.

“We’ve known each other for years. You’re not seriously going to blame me over a baby she lost, are you?”

He pried her hands off his arm, one finger at a time.

“Get out.”

“What?”

“Get out of my house.”

At that moment, his assistant called.

“Mr. Calloway, the board just sent an urgent notice. Now that Ms. Ward has revoked your proxy, the European acquisition no longer has enough votes to pass.

“And the German client has asked to suspend its work with us.”

“Why?”

“They want Ms. Ward leading the project. They said if Crestwell can’t respect the person who actually negotiated the deal, they see no reason to keep working with us.”
