The Ring He Gave Her Chapter 06

The Ring He Gave Her Chapter 06

The ride home was quiet except for Emma’s soft breathing against my shoulder and the low hum of the SUV’s engine

Dad sat beside me, his hand resting on mine. He hadn’t spoken since we left the restaurant. Ryan was in the front passenger

seat, already on the phone with his office, his voice a controlled murmur of legal terminology.

I stared out the rain-streaked window at the Manhattan skyline-all those glittering towers that used to make me feel like I was

living inside a dream. Now they looked like tombstones.

“Dad,” I whispered.

“Hmm?”

“I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you.”

His hand tightened over mine. “Don’t you dare apologize to me, Sadie. Not tonight. Not ever.”

“You warned me about him. You and Ryan both. Before the wedding, you said something felt off. You said his ambition was

bigger than his character. And I- My voice fractured. “I told you that you were being controlling. I said you didn’t want me to be

happy.”

The memory of that fight still burned. I’d screamed at my father in his own study. Called him a tyrant. Told him that if he

couldn’t support my marriage, he shouldn’t bother coming to the wedding.

He came anyway. Walked me down the aisle with tears in his eyes and a smile that I how realized had been grief.

“Sadie.” Dad shifted to face me. In the passing streetlights, I could see the lines that hadn’t been there eight years ago-lines!

had put there. “A father’s job isn’t to be right. It’s to be there when things go wrong. And I will always, always be there.”

I broke down completely. Ugly, heaving sobs that shook my whole body. Emma stirred but didn’t wake. Dad held us both.

Ryan glanced back from the front seat, his jaw tight. He said nothing, but his eyes said everything: I’m going to make Nathan

Cross wish he’d never been born.

When we arrived at Dad’s brownstone in Brooklyn Heights-the house I’d grown up in, the house I’d left for Nathan’s sleek Upper East Side penthouse-the porch light was already on.

Inside, my childhood bedroom had been freshly made up. Fresh flowers on the nightstand. Emma’s favorite cereal already in the pantry. Ryan’s wife, Diane, was waiting with warm towels and chamomile tea.

They’d prepared for me. Before I even knew I needed to come home, they’d prepared.

That night, after I tucked Emma into the guest bed and kissed her sleeping face, I sat in the bathroom and stared at myself in the mirror.

I barely recognized the woman looking back. Hollow cheeks. Dark circles. A body that had been through two miscarriages and the kind of stress that ages you from the inside out.

But my eyes-my eyes were different. There was something new in them Something sharp and hard and unbreakable

I’d spent eight years dimming myself to make Nathan shine Writing his papers. Managing his career Smiling at his hospital galas while he took credit for my ideas. Blaming my own body for babies that never came while he-

I gripped the edge of the sink.

While he poisoned me.

Because that’s what Ryan believed. Not just altered records. Not just manipulated diagnoses. Actual pharmaceutical interference with my pregnancies.

The thought made me physically ill. I leaned over the toilet and retched until there was nothing left.

When I finally crawled into bed, my phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number.

Sadie, it’s Lily. I know you have no reason to trust me, but I found something in Nathan’s home office that you need to see. He

has a safe behind the bookshelf. I know the combination. Can we meet?

I stared at the message for a long time.

Then I typed back: When and where?

Her response was immediate: Tomorrow. 9 AM. The penthouse. He’s been barred from the building by security-Ryan’s doing. I

still have my key.

I’ll be there.

I set my phone down and lay in the dark, listening to the old house creak and settle around me like a grandmother’s embrace

Tomorrow, I would walk back into the home Nathan and I had shared. Tomorrow, I would open his safe and find out exactly what

kind of monster I had married.

And then I would destroy him with his own secrets.
