The Rescue That Was Never A Rescue Chapter 07

Corbett Fuller.

The violent, unpredictable heir to Wynfield’s most powerful dynasty.

He tossed Mr. Reed’s limp hand aside like garbage. “You dare lay a hand on what is mine?”

His voice was quiet, yet it rippled across the entire ballroom.

Mrs. Reed shrieked and threw herself forward to cradle her husband.

Landon’s face turned ashen. He stared at Corbett, utterly stunned. “Mr. Fuller… wh-what brings

you here?”

Corbett didn’t spare him so much as a glance. He walked straight over to my side.

Those eyes, usually cold and ruthless, thawed instantly the moment they settled on me.

“Is this enough? I hope you’re pleased.”

His tone was low and gentle-a stark contrast to the reaper who had just broken a bone without

hesitation.

I looked up at him, and my eyes stung unexpectedly.

Six months earlier, shortly after the Reeds claimed me as their daughter, I had gone back to the nightclub to collect my final paycheck as a cashier.

That night, I stumbled across Corbett, ambushed and bleeding heavily from his wounds.

Pity got the better of me. I dragged him out the club’s back exit, then ran outside alone to draw his

attackers away.

I saved his life. Afterward, I left quietly.

He had searched every corner of Wynfield for me, begging me to leave with him. Foolishly, I’d told him I wanted to stay with my birth family.

He hadn’t pressured me. He only stared deep into my eyes and said one thing. “Come find me

whenever grief or harm finds you.”

Tears glistened in my smile, and I nodded softly. “I’m satisfied. Thank you.”

Landon jolted awake from his daze. Watching the reverence in Corbett’s eyes, Landon finally realized what he had lost.

clutched my wrist in frantic desperation. “Laurel, I’ve made a terrible mistake! Truly I have! Waverly seduced me. Please forgive me. Let’s start over…”

“Get out of my sight.”

Corbett didn’t even turn his head. He lifted one long leg and drove his boot hard into Landon’s

chest.

A heavy thud echoed through the room as Landon was sent sprawling backward, crashing into the towering champagne fountain.

Countless glass tumblers shattered across the floor. Wine and champagne spilled down in a

crimson rain.

“M-Mr. Fuller…” Mr. Reed stammered, pale with terror. “This is a private family matter… We never meant to offend you. I beg you, show mercy and spare us…”

“A family matter?” Corbett let out a cold laugh, looming over him.

“Laurel saved my life. She owes nothing to your family. What is the Reed family, to claim her troubles as your private business?”

His words sent a murmur of shock rippling through every guest. Everyone stared at the Reeds as if they were already corpses.

Mr. and Mrs. Reed were paralyzed with shock, collapsing limply onto the floor.

They had never imagined the country girl they trampled and tormented without mercy was the person the Wynfield tycoon cherished above all else.

“No… it can’t be true!” Waverly shook her head wildly.

Jealousy and terror twisted her features. “She’s nothing but white trash! Why would Mr. Fuller give her a second glance?”

Corbett’s gaze sharpened. “Slap her.”
