Mr. Shaw was about to sign the contract. Chase rushed forward and snatched the pen right out of his hand “Dad, you can’t give her those shares.”

Mr. Shaw looked baffled. “What are you doing now?”

Chase took a deep breath and pulled a paternity test from his bag. “Dad, we got it all wrong. She’s not my

sister.”

The room erupted.

Mr. Shaw’s pen hovered midair. His brow furrowed. “What are you talking about?”

Chase raised his voice for everyone to hear. “I’m saying we got played. I ran a new DNA test. She’s not a

Shaw. We found the wrong person.”

Vera stood right behind him, nodding along.

“Dad, remember Mr. Lewis? The secretary who found her? He resigned right after she showed up.”

“He came to me and confessed everything. The woman in this room isn’t the real Gemma. She heard the story about your missing daughter and paid Mr. Lewis off to fake the results.”

Mr. Shaw stared at them both, completely incredulous.

Mr. Lewis had been his right-hand man for decades. He was the one who’d taken me out to play the day I went missing. The guilt had eaten at him his whole life.

Even after the Shaw family gave up the search, he never stopped. He delayed his retirement for years, working tirelessly until he found me. Only then did he go home to enjoy his grandkids.

A man like that would never conspire to betray him.

“Dad, it’s true.” Chase sighed and held up his phone, showing what looked like chat logs with Mr. Lewis. “I

contacted him. He admitted he made a terrible mistake. That woman is not my sister.”

“So this contract is void. Not only that, we need to throw her out of this house.”

Chase pointed a finger at me, his face burning with righteous outrage.

Mr. Shaw turned to me, his voice unsteady. “Is what they’re saying true? Do you have anything to say for

yourself?”

“I do, actually.” I nodded, then looked straight at Vera. “I just have one question. Vera, how exactly did you pay off Mr. Lewis? Was it with your body?”

“You lying bitch!” Chase’s face went scarlet. He jabbed his finger right in my face. “You pull a disgusting con like this and now you want to smear Vera? Say one more word, and I swear I’ll get you locked up!”

He looked completely insane. Sometimes I genuinely didn’t understand his blind devotion to Vera. Did the

two of them have some twisted secret too?

So I asked exactly that.

Chase’s face cycled from red to purple. He grabbed me by the collar, fist cocked back. “Vera and I are siblings in every way that matters. You vile-”

“Stop, Chase. She’s not worth it.” Vera held him back right on cue, then turned to me. “None of your little smears matter now, Gemma. The DNA results are in. You’re not one of us.”

She looked at Mr. Shaw. “Dad, stop the transfer. Don’t let this con artist get her hands on our family’s assets.”

I laughed. “I’m the con artist? You’re the one who’s actually adopted, Vera.”

“You’re still trying to deny it? We have a DNA test!” Chase slammed his hand on the table and shouted for security to throw me out.

“Enough!” Mr. Shaw’s roar silenced the room. He looked at Chase and tapped a document already on the table. “This paternity test. Who gave it to you? Vera?”

Chase thought his tone was strange but nodded anyway.

Mr. Shaw let out a heavy sigh and slid a different document across the table. “Chase, read this one.”

Chase picked it up. His face went slack as he read the confirmation that I was, without a doubt, Mr. Shaw’s biological daughter. “This is fake,” he stammered.

Mr. Shaw’s voice was tired. “Your mother and I had it done this morning. Gemma suggested it.”

“We took her to the hospital for an expedited test. We watched them draw her blood, collect the sample, and process it. There’s zero chance of fraud.”

Vera’s face turned ghost white. “That’s impossible! It’s a fake! She must have bribed the hospital!”
