When Ms. Maren heard what my mom said, her whole body froze.

“You’re crazy!” she roared at my mom.

“Have you no shame at all?! How can you say something like that to your own child?!”

Mom ignored Ms. Maren. She stood up and pointed at the door.

“Get out.

“My family issue is none of your goddamn business.”

Ms. Maren still had more to say.

But Mom had already lunged forward, shoving her hard out the door.

“Get the hell out!”

Mom pushed Ms. Maren all the way out and slammed the door shut behind her.

Then she turned around and looked at me.

“Look how capable you’ve gotten, huh?”

Mom walked slowly toward me.

“Learned to go running to outsiders now? Using your teacher as your backup?”

“I didn’t,” I mumbled, terrified.

“Am I not good enough for you?

“I sent you to school! I slaved away to raise you!”

“And this is how you repay me—teaming up with outsiders to get at me?!”

Mom grabbed me by the arm and dragged me to my bedroom, then locked the door behind me.

“Think long and hard about who the only person that actually cares about you is!”

I knew Mom was the one who loved me most in the world.

But I didn’t have the headspace to think about that right now.

All I could think about was what Mom said—that once I died, my brother could eat me.

Was that really true?

I was not smart enough to figure it out.

But I didn’t want to stay with Mom like this anymore.

I scrambled up off the floor and walked over to the window.

Crack.

I knocked over the vase sitting on the windowsill.

Mom heard the crash and screamed at the top of her lungs.

“What the hell are you doing in there now!

“Even if you tear the whole room apart I’m not letting you out!”

I heard Mom standing outside my bedroom door, kicking the door over and over.

She only stopped when her legs gave out, leaning against the wood.

Then I heard her crying.

“Wren, baby, come out. I was wrong today.

“I just… I don’t want you thinking your teacher cares more than your mom does.”

Her voice was soft, so gentle.

I’d never seen Mom like this before.

“Don’t cry, Mom. I’ll give you what you want.”

I closed my eyes and jumped.

In the last second before I blacked out, I heard a wolf’s howl.

“Wren!”

Right before everything went dark, I felt a strange, soft touch on my cheek.

That was the last memory I had.

…

Out in the hall, bang bang bang! Loud knocking echoed from the front door.

“Ms. Ashborne! Open up!” It was Ms. Maren’s voice.

Mom furrowed her brow and walked over to open the door.

The second the lock clicked, Ms. Maren pushed her way inside.

Behind her were two Pack security officers.

Ms. Maren’s face was bone white, panic written all over it.

She stepped forward immediately and grabbed Mom hard by the shoulders.

“Ms. Ashborne!

“Did you push Wren off the sixth floor?!”

“What the hell are you talking about?”
