On the first day of the freshman welcome activities, Brittany woke up early and spent an hour perfecting her no-makeup makeup.

During the welcome activities, not just her own classmates but students from other groups, even other majors, kept stealing glances.

She pretended not to notice, but her ears were wide open.

When she heard whispers about how pretty she was, she could barely contain her satisfaction.

At break time, a single “I’m so thirsty” brought bottles and cans from every direction.

Within two days, she’d been crowned the art department’s unofficial queen. Upperclassmen already

came by just to see her.

Photos of her in action circulated across campus.

By day two, at least five guys had confessed their feelings.

Walking back to the dorms, her roommate gushed, “You’re seriously gorgeous, Brittany. You’ll be campus queen in no time.”

“They say our art department has tons of pretty girls, but you blow them all away.”

Brittany’s smile hadn’t fully formed when another roommate gasped, “Holy crap. Who’s that? Perfect side profile, like an angel or something.”

The others crowded around. “What? Another pretty girl? Prettier than Brittany?”

Brittany forced a smile and leaned in. “Let me see.”

On the screen was a slightly blurry photo, clearly taken in a hurry.

The girl wore a baseball cap and carried a suitcase, captured from the side.

Even blurry, that one profile was mesmerizing.

“Flawless jawline…” someone breathed.

“She’s carrying luggage, must be a late arrival. New student?”

“Wait. Didn’t someone in the art department have a late check-in? Em… something?”

Another roommate, Jenna Poole, snorted. “It’s just a blurry side shot. Everyone looks better in soft

focus. She’s probably not even close to Brittany.”

Jenna had been stuck to Brittany like glue the past two days, earning herself a pile of guys’ numbers

by proximity.

But Brittany’s stomach had dropped.

Because the top the girl in the photo wore was identical to the one in Emma’s Instagram back-shot,

Her mind spun through a dozen denials.

Back in her room, she wrestled with it all night.

Finally, she opened the group chat and typed: [@Emma Carlson, did you get to school yet?]

To her shock, a reply came a minute later.

[Arrived today. See you tomorrow.]
