The Only Thing I Wanted Was A Place In The Family Album Chapter 05

The line went dead.

Jonathan stared at his phone for a moment, then panicked and tried calling again.

“Jonathan, I think Amelia is just trying to make you feel guilty,” Chloe said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

“She probably went to the station just so you’d hear the announcement on the phone. Besides, she didn’t take anything with her. How is she even going to get home?”

Jonathan frowned.

It was true. For the past three years, Amelia’s biggest wish had been to be recognized as part of the family.

There was no way she was actually leaving.

Still, he couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling in his gut.

A moment later, he called his assistant.

“Find out if Amelia bought a ticket back to Willow Creek. Let me know as soon as you find anything.”

The assistant agreed and hung up.

Noticing his expression, Margaret asked, “Jonathan, what happened between you and Amelia? Why would she go back to Willow Creek?”

Jonathan glanced at Chloe. “Just a small disagreement. Same as always.”

But Chloe didn’t appreciate him brushing it off. Instead, she grew sarcastic.

“Jonathan has been sneaking off to give Amelia money for bags and jewelry.”

“Why didn’t you just tell me? Amelia has terrible taste anyway. She probably can’t pick out anything decent. I could have helped her choose!”

Something snapped inside Jonathan.

For three years, ever since Amelia came back to Fairhaven, Chloe had been like a live wire whenever her name came up.

He and their mother had made it clear: even if Amelia came home, Chloe would always have a place in the Hart family.

But Chloe still cried and threw tantrums, especially last night at Amelia’s birthday party.

Because of one stupid game, he had to comfort Chloe all night.

In the end, their mother’s blood pressure spiked, and she nearly landed in the hospital.

Frustration and anger boiled over. Jonathan finally snapped, looking coldly at Chloe.

“Haven’t you done enough? Amelia is my biological sister. What’s wrong with me giving her money?”

Caught off guard by his tone, Chloe froze. Then she scowled.

“Jonathan, are you really yelling at me right now? Over Amelia?”

“I don’t understand why you always take her side. Everything was fine before she came back. We’ve had more fights since she showed up!”

Jonathan’s expression hardened, his voice turning icy.

“Take her side? Think about who I’ve really been favoring. Because of you, Amelia hasn’t been home in three years.”

“Last night, at her own birthday party, you deliberately said things to hurt her, and I didn’t say a word to you. And now—”

“She started it!” Chloe suddenly broke down.

Jonathan had never spoken to her like this before. She couldn’t handle it.

“It’s just a birthday party! Why did you have to invite all your friends to celebrate her?”

“And talking about watching the sunrise and planning her foster parents’ funeral? That’s just gross. Why are you only blaming me?”

Jonathan pressed his lips together, staring at her.

He suddenly realized his sister wasn’t cute anymore. Just incredibly spoiled.

Margaret tried to step in and calm Chloe down. “Chloe, I think—”

“Shut up!”

Before Margaret could finish, Chloe shoved her away. Margaret screamed, fell hard, and went pale.

“Mom!” Jonathan’s face changed. He rushed to help her up.

Realizing what she’d done, Chloe looked flustered. “Mom, I didn’t mean to. I’m sorry…”

She tried to help, but Jonathan shoved her back hard. “Don’t touch her!”

Two days in a row, Chloe had hurt their mother. Jonathan had finally had enough.

“Are you going to keep this up until you destroy everything? Did you really think the Hart family couldn’t survive without you?”

Stumbling back, Chloe’s heart sank. She tried to explain. “Jonathan, I didn’t mean to push her so hard…”

“We’ve spoiled you for too long,” he said, helping Margaret onto the couch. “From now on, you won’t call the shots.” He pulled out his phone.

“I’m calling Amelia. She’s coming home.”

Chloe stood there in disbelief. She wanted to stop him, but his glare silenced her.

Margaret rubbed her sore knee. For the first time, she didn’t defend Chloe.

“Bring her home. It’s for the best. Blood is thicker than water.”

Chloe felt like she had been dunked in ice water.

But just as Jonathan was about to dial, his assistant called back.

“What is it?” he snapped.

The assistant’s voice was urgent. “Mr. Hart, I found Amelia’s ticket.

She really left for Willow Creek!”

The phone slipped from Jonathan’s hand and shattered on the floor.
