The Only Color Left In His World Was Another Woman Chapter 08

Brielle’s altitude sickness was getting worse.

Her breathing grew increasingly labored, and her face had gone deathly pale.

“Julian, I feel awful. I can barely breathe.”

“Let’s head back down now.”

But Julian jerked his arm away from her.

“Then go down by yourself!”

He seemed consumed by some desperate obsession, muttering to himself over and over.

“Five years ago, I promised Tessa I’d marry her if I made it to the top of Mount Norens…”

“She’s always had such a soft heart. Once I reach

the summit, she’ll forgive me. I know she will.”

With that, he left Brielle behind and continued up

the mountain alone.

Terrified of getting lost, Brielle had no choice but

to follow him.

By late that night, the sky was filled with stars.

The temperature had dropped to five degrees.

Fahrenheit.

Brielle’s thin wool coat offered almost no

protection against the cold. She was shivering. uncontrollably, her teeth chattering.

Julian opened his backpack, only to discover that the down jacket and sleeping bag he’d packed

were both missing.

He turned toward Brielle, who was huddled behind.

a boulder to escape the wind.

“Did you throw them out?”

Brielle burst into tears, sobbing so hard that her.

nose was running.

“I’m sorry… I didn’t know.”

“I thought it wouldn’t get much colder than

freezing. I figured I could tough it out.”

Julian was furious and exasperated.

For the first time, he realized just how stupid she

could be.

“Then you can freeze to death.”

Despite his words, Julian went over to Brielle and

wrapped his arms around her, trying to keep her

warm with his own body heat.

He knew that if he abandoned her in those

conditions, she really could die.

They somehow made it through the night.

By morning, Brielle’s condition had deteriorated

further. Julian finally managed to establish at

connection on his satellite phone and was about

to call for rescue.

But before he could make the call, Brielle suddenly

screamed and shoved him in front of her.

Jagged chunks of ice tore into Julian’s shoulder,

smashing the satellite phone in his hand.

When Brielle saw the blood pouring from his

shoulder, she began screaming uncontrollably.

Julian clutched his wound and stared at her in

disbelief.

He’d never imagined that Brielle would use him as a human shield when their lives were on the line.

But hadn’t she risked her own life to carry him down Mount Norens after the accident that had

severely damaged his vision?

When he’d opened his eyes afterward, Brielle had

been the first person he’d seen.

From that moment on, she’d become the only

person he could see in color.

The searing pain in his shoulder seemed to jolt him into seeing things clearly.

Everything Brielle had done on this trip made it

obvious she’d never climbed a mountain like this

before. She didn’t even know enough to keep

essential survival gear, much less survive on her

own in such dangerous conditions.

How could someone like that possibly have

carried him down the mountain and saved his life?,

He’d been fooling himself all along.

But Julian’s realization had come far too late.
