Six months later, Ethan and I completed the mating bond.

No ceremony. No family blessings. But I was truly happy.

And I knew-the Moon Goddess brought us together. She would bless us.

But my parents found out somehow. They were members of the Wolf Council, so it was only natural that

they could see my status change.

They lost it. They appealed to the Wolf Management Bureau, claiming that I had been kidnapped.

The Bureau reached out to confirm. I had to meet them.

“Elara!”

Mom rushed over and threw her arms around me. Her eyes were swollen-angry and sad.

“What were you thinking, you foolish girl?”

Dad and Lucas saw Ethan and went dark. They lunged at him. The Bureau agents stepped in fast.

I pulled away from my mother, took Ethan’s hand, and started to walk out.

“Elara! Where are you going?”

They chased after us.

Almost a year had passed. They didn’t look as good as I had imagined they would.

Dad’s beard was gray. Mom’s wrinkles seemed deeper.

When she saw me studying them, she started crying again. “Do you know how we’ve been? How can you be

this cruel? We made mistakes, but we’re your parents. No one loves you more than us. And you just threw

yourself away like this?”

She was furious-like she wanted to tear Ethan apart.

But I stayed calm.

“Ethan. Twenty-seven. Moon Valley Pack. He’s an engineer. He’s my fated mate.”

“Anything else you want to know?”

Mom’s face twisted. “Is that how you talk to your parents?”

Even after all this time, she came at me like I was still under her thumb.

“Mom.”

She froze at that word. Tears welled up.

“We apologized. What more do you want?”

What more did I want?

Even now, I was the one in the wrong.

“I’m going back to work.”

“You can’t. If you walk out that door, I’ll cut you off. For good.”

Ethan squeezed my hand. His face was serious-angry for me. Like he couldn’t understand why any parent

would treat their child like this.

But he stood beside me, solid and steady. Saying without words that he’d support me no matter what.

I smiled. All that suffering-it must have been leading me to him.

I turned to Mom and felt something lift inside me.

“Okay.”

Cut me off.

I already had. They were the ones who kept coming back.

I escaped from them, escaped from the Pack, and went to a foreign country to heal myself.

No matter how hard it got-how weak my wolf grew-I never returned to that place they called home.

Mom’s face froze. Her lips trembled.

Dad pressed his hand to his head, like he might faint.

Lily looked at me without hatred or longing.

I met Lucas’s eyes for the last time. “Goodbye.”

Then I turned and walked away.

Behind me, Mom’s sobs mixed with curses. Dad’s angry shouts.

Good. They hadn’t changed one bit.

That’s why it was so easy to leave.
