The Mountain Highway That Took My Love and Child Chapter 02

The impact flung me clean through the window.

The ropes binding my hands and feet somehow came loose.

I was about to clutch my stomach and cry with relief.

But a split second later, I froze.

I stared at the hands bracing me against the ground.

Why… why were they translucent?

That was when I saw the rest of my body. Half of my body was still crumpled in the car window, blood dripping onto the asphalt.

I hadn’t been saved.

I was dead.

The moment I understood, a violent force dragged my soul away.

I was ripped through space and thrown beside Julian.

Mia stood nearby, her eyes red and puffy as she stared frantically at the GPS display.

She was tracking the supercar I had been trapped in.

Suddenly, she shrieked.

“Julian! You have to stop Lena now! She can’t go that way!”

“Dead Man’s Curve is three miles ahead!”

“There have been twenty rollovers and twelve deaths there in the last three months alone!”

Mia dropped to her knees, clutching at his pant legs. “Julian, I’m begging you!” She sobbed so hard she began banging her forehead against his knee.

“Julian, I’m begging you. Please stop this!”

“Send someone to rescue Lena! It’s too dangerous. She’s going to die!”

Julian stiffened, his expression darkening. Mia wasn’t lying—that stretch of road was a notorious accident hotspot.

Just last month, two cars had overturned and plunged into the ravine.

For once, he checked the tracking dashboard.

The dashboard showed no warnings.

No alerts had been triggered.

Besides, even if something went wrong, the airbags would deploy and protect Lena.

Unless the car was completely crushed, there was no way she’d be hurt.

Julian checked the speed telemetry again.

Seeing that the vehicle still moving smoothly, he relaxed.

He hadn’t realized how tense he was until he let out a breath of relief.

He frowned. “Isn’t it driving just fine?”

“Besides, there’s a CB radio in the car. If something happens, Lena can call for help herself.”

“She’s been quiet, and the emergency system hasn’t alerted us. What are you panicking?”

My spectral form went cold.

What Julian didn’t know was that the microphone I needed to call for help had shattered in the first crash.

And the crash-detection system?

It had been destroyed in the first impact.

He remained clueless, wearing his usual arrogant composure.

He yanked his sister to her feet.

“If you knew it was dangerous, why were you planning to go drag racing?”

“Mia, you don’t even have a driver’s license. If you crashed, you could die!”

“If I hadn’t caught you, would you have kept this from me too?Just like when you were kidnapped?”

“Why do you think I tied Lena to that seat? It was to teach you a lesson! But look at you—you’re wasting the punishment she’s enduring for you!”

The moment the words left Julian’s mouth,it felt as though an invisible hand had closed around my throat.

I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe.

The punishment he had inflicted on me…

…was pain that even death could not numb.
