The Moon Never Chose Me Chapter 07

The Moon Never Chose Me Chapter 07

Gaelan collapsed out of nowhere.

My parents rushed him to Silvermoon Medical Center.

After a battery of tests, the pack healer delivered the news with a grim expression.

“Acute kidney failure. He’s been using banned performance enhancers-wolf stimulants and recovery

boosters-for too long. They’ve done severe damage. We need to find a family match as soon as possible.”

The second Maeve heard “transplant,” her face went white.

She stepped back instinctively.

“No. I’m not getting tested.”

The healer looked at her.

“You’re his twin. Your blood is close. The odds of a match are significantly higher.”

“But donation has to be completely voluntary. No one can force you.”

My mother was already spiraling. She grabbed Maeve’s hand.

“It’s just one kidney. He’s Caelan. Your brother. The one you were born with.”

Maeve wrenched her hand free.

“Why? Why should I give up my kidney for him? That’s not fair!”

Even now-even with his life on the line-she was still crying about fairness.

My mother blacked out with rage.

My father did something he’d never done before. He slapped Maeve across the face.

“Is there anyone in your world besides yourself?”

Maeve clutched her cheek, staring at them in total shock.

Her whole life, they’d never laid a hand on her.

The anger hit her like a wave, drowning out everything else.

“What did I do wrong? This is exactly what you taught us! Everything gets split evenly between me and Caelan. No one gets more than the other. Now he’s sick, and suddenly I’m supposed to sacrifice? You two

donate. Or better yet-call Layla back.”

Then she turned and walked out of the hospital.

My parents stood frozen.

After a long, heavy silence, my mother’s voice finally came out, cracked and shaking.

“How did our most beloved/daughter turn into this?”

“Did we… did we do this?”

My father opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

The healer spoke up again.

“Parents can be tested too. But you’re older. The risks are higher. And while wolves heal fast, organ

transplants aren’t like regular injuries. Recovery takes time. You need to think carefully.”

My mother was quiet for a long moment. Then something desperate flickered in her eyes.

“Layla. She has nowhere else to go. She probably went back to school. That girl’s always been soft. I’ll beg

her if I have to. Maybe she’ll come home.”

She actually bought gifts-nice ones-and showed up at Silverpine Academy with a basket in her hands.

The pathetic part? After all these years, she had no idea which dorm I lived in.

She had to ask around the building before she found my room.

When she got there, Ellis was already inside, talking to my roommate.

My advisor’s eyebrows shot up when she saw my mother walk in.

“Mrs. Moonhart? What brings you here?”

My mother forced an awkward smile, her eyes already scanning the room like she expected me to step out of

the closet.

“We had a little fight a while back. She’s been gone so long. I came to bring her home.”

She stepped further inside, calling out like everything was fine.

“Layla? I know I said some things the other day. I didn’t mean it. Caelan is-

She didn’t get to finish.

My roommate exchanged a look with Ellis, then muttered just loud enough to be heard.

“Wait… she’s really Layla’s mom? She doesn’t even know Layla transferred to Lunar Ring?”

Ellis’s face tightened.

‘Mrs. Moonhart… Layla never told you? She was accepted into the Cross-Pack Transfer Program. She’s already at Frostmoon City, enrolled in the Combat Department at Lunar Ring University.”

All the blood drained from my mother’s face.
