The Man She Loved For Ten Years Let Her Father Die To Protect His Mistress Chapter 08

The kids looked at one another. They had obviously understood exactly what Landon had said.

Then they turned to stare at the two unexpected visitors with open confusion.

“Are you Ms. Wren’s family? Then how come you never showed up before? She’s never even mentioned you.”

Another one pointed at Landon and shot back, “And you said you’re Ms. Wren’s son? Well, I can say I’m her

daughter too.”

That made the whole group burst into laughter. A dozen or so kids crowded around me, chattering all at

once.

“I want Ms. Wren to be my mom too! She’s so gentle, and she knows everything, and she can treat people

when they’re sick. She’s amazing!”

Landon looked like the world had just turned its back on him.

His eyes filled instantly, and he turned to me with a pitiful, wounded look. “Mom, you’re mine.”

I honestly had no idea what Adrian thought he was doing.

He had been the one who ruined me. The one who ruined my father. The one who’d acted like he couldn’t

wait to divorce me.

And now he had tracked me down, looking at me like they were the ones who’d been wronged.

The memories were a cold slap in the face. I stood up and called the children back to order.

“Alright, everyone, class is about to start. Let’s head inside and review first.”

“I’m checking homework, so I hope you’re ready.”

I didn’t spare the two figures at the door a single glance. I just walked inside with the children as if Adrian

and Landon weren’t there at all.

Life on the mountain was hard. I pushed my body to the limit, teaching until my voice was a ghost of itself.

Between the altitude and the climate, I had almost no appetite. In a month, I’d lost a noticeable amount of

weight.

Adrian saw all of it.

The concern in his eyes was impossible to hide. The moment class ended, he came over, his own voice

rough as he called quietly, “Evelyn… you’ve lost weight.”

I had no interest in speaking to him. I hugged my books to my chest and moved to walk around him.

A hand closed hard around my wrist.

Before I could pull away, I was yanked backward into a hard chest.

His arm wrapped around my waist like a vine, tightening and tightening, as if he wanted to fuse me into his

body. His breath came warm against my ear.

“I missed you so much, Evelyn. Why did you just leave like that?”

His voice shook. “I looked for you everywhere. The first place I went was your mother’s hometown. That’s

where I found her grave… and Professor Wren’s.”

The second he said my father’s name, I reacted on instinct.

My hand met his cheek in a stinging crack.

“You don’t get to talk about my dad.”

Back when Adrian had been my father’s best student, he still hadn’t been good enough, on merit alone, to land a placement at a top regional medical center.

He was destined for a backwater clinic. Even my father, who had come from a family of doctors, had taken

that route.

But for me, my father had bent the rules.

He had gone to people one by one, calling in favors, lowering himself for Adrian’s sake, all because he

wanted Adrian to rise faster and have a better life with me.

And what had Adrian done with all of that?

He and his mistress had trampled the dignity of the mentor who had just died.

The slap had turned Adrian’s head sideways. I had put everything I had into it, and I could already see blood

at the corner of his mouth.

But he still looked at me and said, voice catching, “I’m sorry, Evelyn. I know I was wrong.”

He swallowed hard. “I failed your father.”

I didn’t want to hear another word. I drove my knee into his groin, and when he doubled over, I tore myself

free.

Then I looked down at the pain in his eyes and laughed, sharp and cold.

“The person most responsible for my father’s death was Sienna. So if you really want to repent, stop standing here spitting empty apologies.”
