“I’m not going to contest anything,” Kane said. “Every document. Every text. Every exhibit. It’s all true. I did all of it.”

The chamber stirred. His advocate’s face went gray.

“I funded my ego with your inheritance. Tbuilt my legend on your blood. I let another woman wear your miracle on a magazine cover because she photographed better than gratitude. And when you were carrying my children, I didn’t notice. I

didn’t ask. I didn’t care.”

He paused. His jaw worked – the jaw I had rebuilt from venom-rotted ruin.

“You asked me once, if something happened to you, would I take care of you the way you took care of me. And I laughed. I said you were the strongest person I knew. That you didn’t need anyone.”

His voice dropped to almost nothing.

“I wasn’t complimenting you. I was excusing myself. Because if you didn’t need me, I never had to show up. I built a eligion out of your strength so I could worship at someone else’s altar.”

He turned to the Elders.

“Honored Elders, I came here because I was terrified of being erased – the way I erased her. But that fear is mine to carry.

Not hers. Not theirs.”

He drew a folded document from his jacket.

“This is a voluntary withdrawal of my blood-claim. Signed and sealed. I’m also transferring my controlling shares of Blackwood Industries into a warded trust for Leo and Iris Whitlock. The full holding. Every share. And the Silvercrest Succession passes to my Beta’s line. My blood ends its claims today on the company, on the pack, and on them.”

His advocate shot up. “Alpha Blackwood, I strongly advise-”

“Sit down, Richard.”

He laid the document before the Elders. Then he turned back to me one last time.

“You wrote your vows on an index card,” he said. “I will fix what is broken. I will hold what is fragile. I will stay when it’s easier to leave.” His eyes were red, spilling over, and he didn’t wipe them. “You kept every word, Sage. I broke every one of

mine. I can’t rebuild what I destroyed. You’re the healer. Not me.”

He took a breath that shuddered through his whole body.

“But if I can give you one thing after everything I’ve taken, let it be this: you were never invisible. I was just blind. And my blindness cost me the only thing that was ever actually mine.”

He sat down.

The chamber was so silent I could hear the fluorescent lights buzzing against the ancient stone.

The Chief Elder looked at me. “Healer Whitlock. Do you wish to respond?”

I stood. My legs were steady. My hands were still. Surgeon-steady.

I looked at Kane Blackwood – the man I had loved with every cell of my body, the man I had rebuilt from ruin, the man who

had taken my masterpiece and signed someone else’s name to it.

“Honored Elders, I accept the withdrawal. And I want the record to reflect that I do this without malice. I do it out of

survival.”

I paused.

“I spent five years pouring myself into a man who couldn’t see me. I dimmed myself so he could shine. And when I finally stepped into my own light, I discovered something terrifying.”

I looked at Kane one last time. Held his eyes. Let him see that the door inside me was iron, and that iron does not reopen.

“I discovered I had been the sun the entire time. I was just orbiting a man who convinced me I was the moon.”

I sat down.

The Council ruled in minutes. Full custody. The trust sealed and warded. The blood-claim dismissed, permanently, under the old laws – the same old laws he had tried to use against me.

I walked out of that thousand-year-old chamber into ordinary afternoon sun.

My mother was waiting on the steps, Leo wailing in one arm, Iris asleep in the other.

I took them both. One in each arm. Heavy and warm and impossibly alive.

I didn’t look back at the Council hall.

I didn’t need to.
