The Love Missing From Summer Chapter 08

The Love Missing From Summer Chapter 08

Silas Whitcomb knew my parents’ address.

Last year, we each went home for Christmas.

On Christmas morning, we had grinned at each other over video and said Merry Christmas.

The day after Christmas, he drove more than ten hours to my parents’ house to see me.

Back then, he had slipped a small velvet box into my pocket.

Inside was a promise ring.

“Take it. Think of it as a down payment on our future. I’m going to marry you sooner or later.”

At the time, I had nodded solemnly and said yes.

Now everything had changed.

There was no going back.

Silas nervously greeted my dad.

He tried to hand the bottle of wine and the gift box to my dad.

I declined calmly.

“My dad doesn’t drink.”

Silas stiffened, then awkwardly stopped.

I asked my dad to go upstairs first.

Some things probably did need to be said clearly.

Silas’s eyes were threaded with red.

“Tessa, you waited for me all night that day. Now I understand how you felt.”

“Anxious. Nervous. Afraid… I was afraid of losing you.”

I was unmoved and corrected him.

“You have it wrong. I wasn’t afraid of losing you.”

Silas’s eyes trembled.

His voice was hoarse.

“Tessa, I never thought things would get this bad.”

“I didn’t mean to make you wait that day. There really was a reason.”

That reason was Briar Sutton.

I said nothing.

“Briar Sutton answered your call. She said you didn’t want to see me. I didn’t know you were waiting for me.”

“As for the apology video, she begged me to record it.”

“She said she only wanted an apology. Some people at the company were making snide comments, and she wanted something to show them.”

“I was just humoring her. I didn’t know she would post it on Instagram and tag everyone. I only found out when I went to the office looking for you…”

Pain filled Silas’s eyes.

“Tessa, I’m sorry.”

“I never meant to hurt you. I really blame myself.”

His casual humoring of her had done so much damage to me.

An apology now meant nothing.

Silas stared at me.

“There is nothing between Briar Sutton and me. I don’t like her at all.”

“Tessa Calder, the only person I love is you.”
