The Love He Erased Chapter 05

The Love He Erased Chapter 05

Harper came home with a new haircut and Vanessa’s perfume on her sweater.

She stood in the entryway like a guest.

“Hi,” I said.

Her eyes moved over my face. “Dad said you’re better.”

“That depends what he meant.”

Grant stood behind her, watching both of us too closely.

Dinner was takeout because he had forgotten to shop. He ordered Thai food and looked uncomfortable when

I checked the receipt.

“You don’t have to do that,” he said.

“I’m checking for cilantro.”

Harper looked up.

Grant blinked. “You remember?”

“Yes.”

For one second, Harper’s face softened.

Then she looked down at her plate. “Vanessa says cilantro tastes grown-up.”

I set the receipt on the table. “Then you can decide if you want it.”

Grant stared at me.

The old me would have picked through the food before Harper saw it. The old me would have protected everyone, then apologized when protection looked like control.

Harper pushed noodles around with her fork.

The next day was her school showcase.

Grant forgot until his mother called.

By the time we reached the auditorium, the first performance had started. Parents lined the walls with their phones out. A volunteer handed me a program.

I found Harper’s name.

Harper Whitaker

Solo piece: The Spring Window

Special thanks to my dad, Dr. Grant Whitaker, and my second mom, Vanessa Bell.

My second mom.

The letters looked clean and harmless on the paper.

Grant saw them too.

His face went slack.

Onstage, Harper stood in costume under the lights. Her eyes swept the audience.

She found Grant.

Then me.

Then the empty space where Vanessa should have been.

The music started.

Harper did not move.

A woman near me whispered, “Poor thing. Her mother didn’t come?”

“I’m here,” I said.

She turned red and looked away.

Harper ran offstage.

We found her in the nurse’s office, shaking so hard the paper cup in her hand was crumpling.

Grant knelt in front of her. “Sweetheart, it’s okay.”

“No, it’s not,” Harper sobbed. “Vanessa promised. She said she’d fix my hair and sit in the front row.”

The nurse glanced at me. “She had a panic episode. She’s safe, but she’s upset.”

Grant looked at me with that old, desperate anger. The kind he used when he wanted someone else to hold

the guilt.

“You should have known she needed you early.”

I held up the program. “I didn’t know I was invited.”

Harper covered her face.

Grant’s voice dropped. “Elise.”

“No. She put another woman down as her mother in front of the whole school.”

“She’s a child.”

“She’s old enough to know what that means.”

Harper lifted her head. Her face was blotchy. “I didn’t think you’d come.”

“So you gave my name away?”

She started crying again.

Grant stood. “Stop. You’re hurting her.”

“I’m not yelling.”

“That doesn’t mean you’re not hurting her.”

I looked at him. “You’re right.”

That stopped him.

I turned back to Harper. “I know this hurts. I know you’re embarrassed. But I’m not going to pretend this

was an accident.”

Harper’s mouth trembled. “Vanessa makes things normal.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means Dad laughs. People don’t ask if you’re sick. Nobody whispers.”

There it was.

Not cruelty, exactly.

Something worse.

A child repeating the shape of adult shame.

I set the program on the chair beside her.

“I’m sorry my pain embarrassed you,” I said. “But I won’t apologize for having it.”

Harper stared at me.

“If you want Vanessa, call Vanessa. If you want me, ask me. I’m done guessing.”

Grant blocked the door when I turned to leave.

“Our daughter is crying.”

“She has you.”

“That’s not enough.”

I looked at him.

“You should have thought of that before you taught her I was too much.”

He stepped aside.

In the hallway, my phone buzzed.

Owen: First client liked your sample. She wants September if you’re ready.

I stood under the harsh school lights and read it twice.

Behind the nurse’s door, Harper was still crying.

I did not go back.

Not because I did not remember loving her.

Because, for once, I remembered myself too.
