Only when I got back to my staff apartment at the Institute did I feel alive again.

There were no sparkling chandeliers or plush carpets here.

Just spotless white walls, a bed, a desk, and a whiteboard half the size of my old bedroom covered in

equations.

Oh, and a very comfortable beanbag chair.

I dropped into it and let out a long breath.

A little while later, someone knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

In walked the Institute’s deputy director, Dr. Daniel Lee, carrying a mug that he set down within

easy reach.

“Your favorite single-origin coffee, freshly ground,” he said with a cheerful smile. “I watched the livestream. Things were pretty lively, huh, Dr. Reed?”

I took a sip.

Familiar as ever.

“It was okay,” I said lazily. “Not as fun as watching galaxies collide.”

Dr. Lee burst out laughing and didn’t seem bothered by my attitude at all.

He pulled over a chair, sat down, and pointed to one corner of the whiteboard.

“We ran that hypothesis you proposed last time through the Deep Sky Array, and the data model we

got back is very interesting.”

As I was getting ready to dive into the model with him, the doorbell to my apartment rang again.

I frowned.

Everyone at the Institute knew my habits.

They either messaged me directly or pinged my Al assistant.

Anyone actually using the doorbell had to be an outsider.

Dr. Lee got up to answer it.

The person standing outside surprised even me.

It was Ethan.

He had come alone, holding an expensive-looking food box and hovering in the doorway with a slightly awkward expression
