The Last Mystery Box Says No Chapter 07

The Last Mystery Box Says No Chapter 07

Hawail’s nights were quiet.

Weston stood outside that white apartment building from midnight until dawn.

Sea air was salt and damp, his shirt wrinkled beyond recognition.

Seven a.m., the entrance door opened.

Sabrina walked out, hair in a ponytail, no makeup. She’d lost a lot of weight, her collarbones sharp.

She saw him.

No shock. No anger.

She looked at him the way you’d look at a stranger.

“Go home.”

She walked past him toward the convenience store across the street.

He followed. “Sabrina.”

She didn’t stop.

“Sabrina, I found out about the whole mystery–box arrangement. It was your parents, behind your back. I

know now. I really know!”

She picked up a carton of milk, got in line to pay.

“I looked into what Brielle did too–the marriage certificate, that night–all of it, her setup.

She paid, took her milk, headed for the door.

“Sabrina, look at me.”

She finally stopped. Turned around, looked at him, her expression completely level.

“And then?”

He opened his mouth. “I was wrong.

“Yeah, you were.‘

She nodded, turned, kept walking.

He stood rooted to the spot, the sun too bright in his eyes.

She never looked back.

The next day, he wired her a million dollars. It bounced back.

The day after, five million. Bounced back.

The fourth day, he had his assistant deliver a whole truckload of gifts to the building.

Flowers, jewelry, clothes, supplements–piled up half the hallway.

That night, building management hauled all of it away.

Callum’s assistant relayed a message: “Ms. Whitlock says please stop bothering her.”

He didn’t leave.

He booked a room at the hotel across from the building, stood outside every morning waiting for her to

come out.

She never looked at him.

Then one day, it rained.

Hawaiian rain comes hard and fast, pouring down without warning.

She came out of the convenience store under an umbrella.

He was still standing in his usual spot, soaked through.

She walked right past him. He suddenly spoke.

“Sabrina, I filed against Brielle.”

“The marriage certificate’s already in the process of being annulled, she’s being charged with forging legal documents, police have opened a case.”

Her steps slowed slightly.

“Your parents… I’ve got lawyers going after the $1.88 million. I’ve looked into Harper toe.”

She stopped walking, back still to him. “None of that has anything to do with me anymore.”

“It does.”

“Sabrina, give me a chance.”

She didn’t move.

He dropped straight to his knees.

Knees hit the wet ground with a dull thud.

Rain streamed down his forehead, impossible to tell what was rain and what wasn’t.

Please…

She turned around and looked down at him.

The umbrella never moved to cover him.

She looked at him for a long time.

“Weston, that night I called you a dozen times.”

He knelt on the ground, looking up at her.

“She had a fever of a hundred and four, in the ER, in critical care. The nurse came out three times demanding payment. Eight thousand dollars.”

Her voice cracked.

“You were at Brielle’s, checking on her baby choking on some milk. I was on my knees at the payment window with nine dollars and ninety cents to my name.”

lders started shaking.

ome. Even a little late. Even an hour late. She wouldn’t have died.”

ched down, level with him.

hit both their faces.

Weston. This, how do you make up for this?”

His lips trembled, no sound came out.

Tears mixed with rainwater, running down.

He wanted to speak. Wanted to say sorry.

But those two syllables felt laughably light.

He couldn’t answer.

She stood, opened her umbrella, and walked away.

In the rain, only he remained, kneeling.
