When the surgery was over, the two outside were gone.

Mira posted a photo on her PackNet story.

She was sitting in Damon’s passenger seat eating chips, crumbs scattered everywhere.

[The hallway’s so cold. We’re waiting in the car for you :P]

Damon was obsessive about scent cleanliness. He never let me eat bread in the car.

But he put up with the mess Mira made.

I let out a soft laugh and liked the post.

Then I called the bond ceremony planner.

“Cancel the marking ceremony.”

A regretful voice came through. “Why? You spent almost two years planning this.”

I stared at the photo of the two of them so close, and smiled bitterly.

“I don’t want to become his Luna anymore.”

Strangely, once I hung up, my obsession with Damon seemed to vanish all at once.

Faced with my mate choosing another she-wolf over me, my wolf no longer howled in pain.

This appendectomy hadn’t just removed my appendix, it seemed to have severed the bond link between me and Damon.

I hailed a cab nearby and went home.

In the early hours, Damon pushed the door open, anger clear in his voice.

“We waited in the parking lot for over two hours. Mira was freezing her ass off, sneezing. Did you do it on purpose just to spite her?”

His eyes were filled with pity for his Omega assistant.

A pity I never got, even after a whole night of agony.

Mira played peacemaker as always.

“Stop fighting. Astra just had surgery, she needs to rest.”

“And I actually have a few documents for you to review. The client’s waiting.”

Damon’s anger vanished in an instant.

The two of them headed to the guest room together and didn’t come out all night.

The next day, when I came out, Damon was sitting at the dining table.

“I went out early to grab these. Try one, see if they still taste the same.”

It was the strawberry scones from the old bakery near our first office. They used to be my favorite.

He used to stand in line for me all the time.

Later, he’d claim he was too busy with work, but secretly brought the scones to Mira’s Omega assistant office every day.

After that, I stopped liking them.

“We talked about work until really late last night. Next thing we knew, we’d both crashed on the bed.”

As he spoke, he brought his arm up to my nose.

“Smell if you don’t believe me.”

The distinct jasmine scent of Mira flooded my nostrils.

My inner wolf suddenly felt a wave of churning nausea.

I bolted into the bathroom and scrubbed the spot he’d touched like a maniac until my palms were raw.

Damon stood at the bathroom door, looking completely baffled.

Then, out of nowhere, he let out a cold laugh.

“When your mother was assaulted, she scrubbed herself just like that—like a goddamn lunatic. Like mother, like daughter, I guess!”

“You’re out of your mind! Mira’s ten times more stable than you.”

I stopped scrubbing.

The air went completely still, so still you could only hear the water running.

Back then, my mother was assaulted by a former Alpha supervisor. My father divorced her on the spot.

That night, she lay in the bathtub and slit her wrists.

With her last ounce of strength, she said to me, “Don’t trust men.”

Even though I hated the criminal and my father just as much, I shook my head.

“Damon’s good to me. He’s different.”

Now, hearing those words come out of his own mouth, I suddenly realized.

He wasn’t any different after all.

I took a deep breath and said, seriously, “Then marry her.”

“Damon, we’re done.”
