The Hundred Missions Were Just Their Love Game Chapter 04

I took a cab to the hospital to see my grandma.

She was eighty years old, and her health had deteriorated badly, leaving her in need of long-term hospital

care.

The moment she saw me, she asked, “How are things with Gavin? Does he treat you well?”

I nodded. “He’s wonderful. We’re getting married in three days.”

She smiled warmly and pulled a bracelet from beneath her pillow.

“Your grandfather gave this to me when we were young. It was a keepsake of our love. I want you to have it now. I hope you and Gavin will grow old together.”

“Once you’re married, don’t forget to come back and tell Grandma. Okay?”

I looked down at the bracelet, my nose stinging. I was just about to speak when another voice interrupted.

“Mrs. Grant, I’ve been a little busy lately. We’ll have to put the wedding on hold.”

I turned around and saw Joel and Nina walking into the room together. I couldn’t be bothered with them, so I

got up to leave.

Joel followed me and grabbed my wrist. “Valery, what are you doing? Why did you have to tell your grandma

about getting married? Trying to pressure me through your grandma won’t work. I told you, I can’t go that

day!”

I slapped his hand away. “Let go of me!”

Joel grabbed my wrist again, his voice softening. “Valery, listen, I…”

Before he could finish, Nina came closer, her eyes fixed on my bracelet, and reached for it.

“It’s beautiful, Valery. Can I try it on?”

I instinctively pulled it back to protect it.

Nina lifted her arm, and the bracelet slipped from her fingers and crashed onto the tile floor.

It shattered into several pieces.

Grandma shot upright, reaching desperately for it. “My bracelet… My bracelet…” Then her eyes rolled back, and her body collapsed.

A group of doctors rushed into the room.

We were pushed out into the hallway as the doors to the operating room closed.

I spun around and slapped Nina across the face. “Did you do that on purpose? If anything happens to

Grandma, I’ll never forgive you!”

Nina covered her cheek, tears filling her eyes. “I didn’t mean to! It was an accident. It’s just a stupid bracelet.

I’ll pay you back!”

I raised my hand again in anger, but Joel stopped me. “Enough! I’ll go through with the marriage once your

grandma is out of danger.”

I shoved him away. “Who wants to marry you? You deserve each other. You and that lying fraud can stay

together for the rest of your lives.”

A pause, and I added, “Joel, remember this. From this day forward, I want nothing to do with you.”

Just then, the operating room doors opened. The doctor stepped out and slowly shook his head.

“The patient was too old. Her body couldn’t withstand the shock. Sorry, we couldn’t save her.”

It felt as if something heavy had slammed into my chest. My vision went black, and I collapsed.

When I woke up again, Grandma’s funeral was already over.

My phone was filled with messages from Joel.

[Valery, I’m sorry. I’ve been tied up with Nina’s prenatal appointments these past few days.]

[Please stop being angry with me. Your grandma’s final wish was for us to get married as soon as possible. I’ll go with you tomorrow and make it official, okay?]

[Valery, please talk to me. I miss you so much…]

I ignored the messages and opened the contact saved as “Gavin Banks.”

[Did you land?]

[Yeah.]

[Meet me outside the county clerk’s office.]

At the same time, Joel had just walked out of the OB-GYN clinic. He stood at the end of the hallway and took

a long drag from his cigarette when one of his friends called.

“Joel, where are you?”

“At the hospital. What’s up?”

His friend’s voice was practically bursting with excitement. “Dude, did you see Valery’s post? This is huge, and that’s all the reaction you’ve got?”

Joel frowned. “What happened?”

“Valery got married, man! And the groom wasn’t you!”

Joel froze for a few seconds, then opened his social media feed. When he saw the post, his pupils

contracted.

The next second, he spun around and sprinted for the exit.
