The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 20

The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 20: The Rented Tuxedo

“Suck your stomach in, Leo,” Marcus barked through the tablet speaker. “The jacket won’t button if you slouch.”

I sat perfectly still in the plush leather chair of the Consortium’s executive dressing room. My makeup artist dusted powder across my cheekbones. I kept my gaze locked on the secure video feed resting on my vanity.

On the screen, my ex-husband yanked at the lapel of a cheap polyester tuxedo.

“It smells like mothballs, Dad,” Leo complained. He scratched at his neck. “And the pants are too short.”

“It is a European cut,” Marcus lied, swatting Leo’s hand away from the collar. “Stop fidgeting. You look like a millionaire.”

I scoffed quietly. The rental shop’s fluorescent lights highlighted the shiny, frayed seams of the discount suits.

“Are we applying the crimson lipstick, Madam President?” the makeup artist asked.

“Yes,” I answered. “Make it sharp.”

On the monitor, Chloe shoved her way past a rack of plastic-wrapped garments. She dragged Mia by the wrist.

“Stand up straight, Mia,” Chloe ordered. “Look at this. Authentic couture.”

Mia stared miserably into the trifold mirror. She wore a heavy, outdated burgundy gown that swallowed her small frame. The velvet bodice looked faded. The excessive ruffles screamed of a decade-old fashion trend.

“It itches,” Mia whined, pulling at the neckline. “And the zipper is broken.”

“I pinned it,” Chloe snapped. “Nobody will notice in the dark. I paid three hundred dollars for this rental. You will wear it, and you will smile.”

“But my friends are going to be at the hotel,” Mia protested. “They will laugh at me.”

Marcus stepped behind them, placing his hands on Mia’s shoulders. He flashed a brilliant, entirely hollow smile at their reflection.

“Nobody is going to laugh,” Marcus declared. “Tonight, we walk into the Sapphire Hotel as VIPs. We are going to rub elbows with the Wentworth board. By midnight, I will have a check to save Zenith, and we will buy you a brand-new wardrobe tomorrow.”

“Promise?” Mia asked, her tone shifting from miserable to greedy.

“I guarantee it,” Marcus said. He pulled Chloe into his side. “We are walking out of that ballroom with everything we deserve.”

Chloe leaned her head against his shoulder. “We belong in that room, Marcus. Not in that awful apartment.”

My eyes burned. A dry, scraping ache settled behind my eyelids as I watched them preen in the mirror.

Ten years. I spent ten years masking my identity, clipping grocery coupons, and pretending to stress over utility bills just to protect his fragile ego. I built a quiet, safe life for those children. Now, they stood in a discount shop, twisted into grotesque caricatures of greed, hyping each other up on a foundation of absolute lies.

It was no longer a tragedy. It was an absurd comedy.

The dressing room door swung open. Julian stepped inside, carrying a black velvet tray.

“The security feeds at the venue are live, ma’am,” Julian reported. “Garrison’s team is in position.”

“Good,” I said.

Julian set the tray on the vanity. The makeup artist stepped back, giving him room.

Julian unclasped the heavy lid and folded it back.

The Wentworth family necklace rested on the satin cushion. Dozens of flawless, emerald-cut diamonds formed a thick choker, leading down to a massive, tear-shaped center stone. It caught the vanity lights, throwing fractured rainbows across the walls.

“Allow me,” Julian offered.

I leaned forward slightly. Julian lifted the jewelry.

He draped the diamonds around my neck. The metal and stone hit my bare skin. The sudden, freezing weight pressed against my collarbone. It felt like a chain, but not one that bound me. It was armor.

Julian secured the platinum clasp at the nape of my neck.

“It is secured,” he noted, stepping away.

I stared at my reflection. The red lipstick slashed across my mouth. The diamonds glittered at my throat. I did not look like the exhausted housewife the world had labeled Serena Vance. I looked like Serena Wentworth, the apex predator of the financial district.

I rolled my shoulders back. My spine snapped into perfectly straight alignment. Every trace of the weeping mother vanished, replaced by the cold precision of a general stepping onto a battlefield.

“They are leaving the rental shop,” Julian said, checking his phone. “Marcus booked a low-end town car to take them to the venue.”

“Let them enjoy the ride,” I replied. I tapped the screen of the tablet, switching the feed to the private investigator’s camera.

The video cut to a cramped barber shop two blocks from the rental store.

Leo sat in the leather chair, a barber buzzing the sides of his hair. Marcus had sent him ahead to get cleaned up while the girls finished dressing.

“Keep it tight on the sides,” Leo instructed the barber, his voice dripping with unearned arrogance. “I have a high-society gala tonight.”

The barber grunted, ignoring the attitude.

Next to Leo, an older man sat in the waiting area. He flipped open the evening edition of the city’s financial newspaper.

The bold headline read: *Wentworth Consortium CEO to Make Rare Appearance.*

Beneath the text, a massive photograph dominated the page. It was a silhouette shot taken from behind. A woman stepping into a limousine, wearing a sharp trench coat, her posture unmistakable.

Leo glanced over. His eyes lazily scanned the paper.

He blinked. He leaned forward, straining his neck against the barber’s cape.

“Sit still, kid,” the barber warned, pulling the clippers back.

Leo ignored him. He squinted at the grainy photograph. The slope of the shoulders. The exact way the woman tilted her head.

The color drained from his face.

He ripped his arm out from under the nylon cape and pointed a shaking finger directly at the newsprint.

“Hey!” Leo shouted, his voice cracking loudly over the buzz of the clippers. “Why the hell does the Wentworth billionaire look exactly like my mother?”
