The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 13

The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 13: The Forged Invitation

Marcus stood frozen in the center of the lobby. He tilted his chin up, tracking the gold letters scrolling across the massive digital billboard.

“He is dialing a number,” Julian announced from beside my desk.

“Put it on the speakers.”

Static popped through the ceiling audio. Then, Chloe’s voice echoed in my office.

“Marcus? Are you on your way home?”

“Did you see the news?” Marcus demanded. He paced a tight circle near the security desk, ignoring the guards watching him. “The Wentworth Consortium Gala is next month.”

“Okay? What does that have to do with us?”

“Everything!” Marcus shouted. A guard shot him a warning glare. He lowered his voice to a frantic hiss. “The board thinks my career is finished. If I show up at that gala, rubbing elbows with the syndicate, they will back off. They will give me the bridge loan.”

“We do not have tickets, Marcus.”

“You have connections!” He smacked his hand against his damp thigh. “Your father is a venture capitalist. Call him. Get us on that list.”

“How am I supposed to demand invites to a billionaire event?” Chloe stammered.

“Figure it out, Chloe! I am losing my company!”

The call disconnected. Marcus shoved his phone into his pocket and stumbled toward the revolving glass doors.

I muted the feed. My thumb brushed the base of my left ring finger. The skin there remained slightly indented, a pale ghost of a wedding band I wore for a decade.

A dull ache radiated through my knuckles. The phantom weight of the jewelry felt heavier than the gold itself. Lies snowballed, gathering speed and mass, dragging all of us into the freezing dark. I built this meat grinder. I had to watch them walk into the blades. No flinching.

A sharp chime interrupted the silence.

“The system backend just flagged an anomaly,” Julian said. He handed me the tablet.

I scanned the glowing screen. “An application for the gala?”

“Submitted under the name Chloe Dupont. She claims to represent the Dupont European Trust.”

“She forged it.”

“Terribly,” Julian agreed. “The IP address traces back to a public library computer two blocks from their rental apartment. The corporate seal attached to the PDF is a low-resolution image file.”

“Did security reject the submission?”

“Standard protocol dictates immediate deletion.”

I tapped my manicured nail against the glass desk. A sharp, rhythmic sound filled the quiet room.

“Override the protocol,” I ordered.

Julian paused. “You want to approve a fraudulent entry?”

“No. I want you to issue a waitlist pass.” I pushed the tablet back toward him. “Generate a physical ticket. Print it on heavy cardstock. Embed a unique QR barcode.”

“What will the barcode do?”

“Nothing,” I said. “It is a tracking graphic. It does not grant access to the ballroom. It grants access to the service corridor.”

“They will think they secured VIP status.”

“Exactly. Have a courier drop it off at their apartment.”

Julian nodded and tapped the screen. “Dispatching the file to the printing office now.”

Two hours later, the private investigator’s hidden camera feed flickered to life on my secondary monitor.

The cramped living room of Marcus’s new rental apartment looked like a disaster zone. Fast food wrappers littered the cheap coffee table.

The front door swung open.

Chloe marched inside, clutching a thick black envelope.

“Where is your father?” she asked.

Leo slouched on the lumpy sofa. He kept his eyes glued to his video game. “He went to a pawn shop to sell his watches. Did you bring food?”

“I brought something better.” Chloe tossed the envelope onto the table.

Mia emerged from the narrow hallway. She wore oversized sweatpants, her face still red and swollen from the school dance disaster.

“What is that?” Mia mumbled.

“Proof,” Chloe declared. She crossed her arms, a smug smile spreading across her face. “Your father told me to use my old money connections. So I did.”

Leo paused his game. He leaned forward, eyeing the black paper. “Connections for what?”

“The Wentworth Charity Gala.” Chloe pulled a stiff, gold-embossed card from the envelope. “We are going. All of us.”

Mia’s jaw dropped. “Are you serious? Madison’s parents failed to get tickets to that! It is impossible.”

“Not for a Dupont,” Chloe lied smoothly. She waved the card in the air. “I pulled a few strings with my uncle in Geneva. They practically begged us to attend.”

I watched the screen, my stomach twisting. The sheer audacity of her lie was staggering. She stood there, feeding my children absolute garbage, and expecting them to swallow it whole.

“Let me see it,” Leo said.

“Do not bend the edges,” Chloe warned. She handed the card over. “It is our golden ticket. Your dad is going to secure his funding, and we are moving back into a penthouse.”

Leo flipped the heavy cardstock over in his hands. He ran his thumb across the raised gold foil.

“This looks intense,” Leo muttered.

“It is ultra-exclusive,” Chloe boasted. “We will be sitting with tech billionaires.”

“There is a barcode on the back,” Leo noted.

“It is for security scanning at the door,” Chloe explained quickly. “Leave it alone.”

“Wait,” Leo said. He dug into his pocket and pulled out his smartphone. “Madison posted a video about these tickets last year. If you scan the code, it shows you your table assignment.”

Chloe’s smug expression faltered. Panic flashed across her eyes. She knew exactly where she submitted that application.

“Leo, put the phone away.”

“I just want to see where we are sitting,” he argued.

“I said no!” She lunged across the coffee table, trying to snatch the card back.

Leo dodged her grasp. He held the ticket out of her reach and raised his phone.

“Stop!” Chloe shrieked.

The camera caught the bright flash of Leo’s screen.

A sharp beep echoed from the phone’s speaker. He had scanned the barcode.
