The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 05

The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 05: The Eviction Notice

I stared at the text message from my son. The screen glowed harshly in the dark.

*Mom. Dad is screaming at the dealership manager. The police just showed up.*

I locked the phone and set it face-down on the patio table. I did not type a reply.

The night wind whipped across the third-story balcony of Wentworth Manor. I pulled the emerald velvet robe tighter around my waist.

Julian stepped through the glass doors. He carried a silver tray holding a fresh tablet.

“Marcus is currently sitting in the back of a squad car,” Julian reported. “The dealership pressed charges for disturbing the peace and suspected fraud.”

“Leave him there,” I instructed. “Is the legal team in position?”

“Mr. Hale is waiting outside the penthouse right now.”

I picked up the tablet. “Marcus spent weeks bragging about that ten-million-dollar property. He threw a massive catered party just to celebrate signing the lease.”

“A lease underwritten entirely by your private trust,” Julian reminded me.

“A trust I just dissolved.” I swiped the screen to open the live feed.

“Evict them.”

The video buffered for a second, then snapped into sharp, high-definition focus. Mr. Hale stood in the lavishly lit corridor of the luxury high-rise. He raised a fist and pounded heavily on the double mahogany doors.

Silence stretched for fifteen seconds. He knocked again, harder.

The lock disengaged with a sharp click. The door swung inward.

Chloe stood in the threshold. She wore a sheer silk pajama set, her arms crossed defensively.

“Who the hell are you?” Chloe demanded. “Do you have any idea what time it is?”

“Good evening, Ms. Davis,” Hale said. His voice sounded entirely devoid of emotion. “I represent the Wentworth Holdings Trust.”

“I don’t care who you represent. You don’t knock on my door like a common thug.”

Hale held up a thick manila folder. “I am here to serve an official notice of eviction.”

Chloe barked a harsh, mocking laugh. “Eviction? Are you out of your mind? My fiancé pays twenty thousand dollars a month for this place.”

“Your fiancé pays nothing,” Hale corrected. “The trust subsidizes this residence. The owner has officially terminated the agreement. You have exactly twenty-four hours to vacate the premises.”

Loud, chaotic gunfire erupted from the background. The video feed picked up the massive living room behind Chloe.

Leo and Mia sat cross-legged on the custom Italian leather sofa. They gripped gaming controllers, their eyes glued to a massive flat-screen television.

“Chloe, shut the door!” Leo yelled over his shoulder. “I can’t hear the game!”

“Tell that creep to get lost,” Mia added, not even pausing her digital match. “He’s ruining my focus.”

Chloe smirked at Hale. “You hear that? My kids are trying to relax. Leave before I call security.”

“Security escorted me up here, Ms. Davis,” Hale replied. He pulled a heavy-duty stapler from his briefcase. “I strongly suggest you start packing your belongings.”

“I’m calling Marcus,” Chloe threatened. She pulled her phone from her pajama pocket. “He will have your legal license revoked. He will ruin you.”

“Mr. Vance is currently detained by local authorities for attempting to purchase a vehicle with frozen assets,” Hale informed her. “He will not be answering his phone tonight.”

Chloe froze. Her thumb hovered over the glowing screen.

Hale bypassed her entirely. He stepped into the entryway, pressed the court-ordered notice against the expensive silk wallpaper, and drove the stapler into the drywall.

*Thwack.*

“Hey!” Chloe shrieked. “You can’t do that!”

Mia threw her controller onto the floor. She marched into the hallway, her face twisted in an ugly sneer.

“Are you deaf?” Mia screamed at the lawyer. “My dad is a multi-millionaire CEO! He can buy this entire building and fire you! Get out of our house!”

The words hit me straight through the tablet speakers.

My chest stopped moving. Oxygen stalled in my throat.

I stared at the screen. The fourteen-year-old girl in the video looked exactly like me, but the twisted, entitled expression on her face belonged entirely to Marcus. I raised her to be kind. I taught her the value of a dollar. I sacrificed my own meals so she could have new shoes for school.

Now, she was a monster. Vanity had completely rotted her from the inside out.

I pressed my bare palm flat against the cold glass railing of the balcony. The freezing temperature bit into my skin. The chill traveled up my arm, sinking directly into my chest. It iced over the very last shred of pity I held for my family.

They chose this life. Now they would reap the consequences.

“Twenty-four hours, Ms. Davis,” Hale repeated. He ignored the screaming teenager completely. He turned and walked back toward the elevators.

Chloe lunged forward. She ripped the paper off the wall, tearing the top corners in her haste.

“I’m suing you for harassment!” she yelled down the hall. “I’m taking everything you own!”

She slammed the door shut.

The camera angle shifted immediately. Hale had a body cam pinned to his lapel, but Julian had also hacked the internal security feed of the penthouse. The screen split down the middle.

Inside the entryway, Chloe glared at the document in her hands.

“I’ll show him,” she muttered, pacing the hardwood floor. “Marcus is going to destroy this stupid trust.”

She scanned the legal jargon. Her eyes darted back and forth across the dense paragraphs.

“What does it say?” Mia asked, crossing her arms.

“Just a bunch of fake threats,” Chloe dismissed.

Then, she reached the bottom of the page.

Her gaze locked onto the signature line. The official stamp of the trust’s sole owner sat right above the cursive ink.

Chloe stopped pacing.

The color drained rapidly from her face, leaving her skin a sickly, ashen gray. Her jaw dropped open, but no sound came out. The court document trembled violently in her hands.
