The Godfather’s Twenty Year Dream Was Her Chapter 11

His face flushed instantly. “I—that was…”

“Why did you help Alistair’s mom?”

Rafael paused for a long moment before answering. “I thought, if you were willing to give all that money to save her, she must mean so much to you. I didn’t want you to grieve, so I didn’t want her to die.”

God, he was such an idiot.

I woke up the next morning with a knot in my stomach. Something felt wrong.

Sure enough, as soon as I sat down in class, someone called me to the principal’s office.

I walked toward the door confused. Then a man burst out, raised his hand, and slapped me hard across the face.

“The principal called me. Said you’re dating some useless rich kid.”

“You little slut. Just like your mother. Can’t live without spreading your legs for rich boys, huh?”

“I’d rather beat you to death than let you keep disgracing this family!”

The slap came out of nowhere, hard enough to snap my head back. My ears rang.

My vision blurred. All I could feel was him grabbing my hair and slamming my face against the wall.

A crowd rushed over to pull him off. I was thrown around like a doll, helpless.

Suddenly, strong arms wrapped securely around me. Then I saw Rafael, gasping for breath after sprinting over.

“Are you okay?”

I blinked and nodded numbly.

He took off his jacket and draped it over me, rolled up his sleeves, and kicked my father square in the chest. “Fuck you!”

My dad was older, and the blow knocked him flat. He sat stunned on the floor for a second before erupting in rage. “I’m her father! I have every right to discipline her!”

Rafael looked like a wild animal provoked. “A man like you doesn’t deserve to be anyone’s father!”

Teachers shouted warnings that no one actually expected him to heed. Some students even cheered him on.

Amid the chaos, someone lifted me up.

It was Alistair, who’d arrived a little too late.

His jaw was tight, eyes bloodshot. “I’ll take you to the nurse’s office.”

He ignored the fight raging behind us and strode away with me.

I blinked, and memories of dating Alistair in my past life flooded back.

My dad had gotten addicted to gambling. He’d tracked me down at college and cornered me outside campus, demanding money. We’d argued right there at the school gates.

Alistair hadn’t wanted to make a scene, so he’d secretly paid my dad off behind my back.

After that, my dad’s greed had only grew, and he’d kept asking for larger sums. Alistair had kept giving him money every single time.

I’d fought with Alistair over this many times. He’d promise to stop, yet still transfer cash to my dad.

Until one day, I’d gotten a call from the police identifying a body. My dad had gotten his hands on dangerous drugs after getting the money, and had died.

That’s when it hit me: Alistair hadn’t been weak. He’d been patient. He’d protected me the only way he knew how—by letting my father destroy himself.

I stayed in the hospital for three days with a concussion.

Classmates came to visit and told me Beatrix had tipped the principal off.

The principal, wanting to get revenge for his daughter, repeated all those nasty rumors to my dad and threatened to expel me.

My dad was humiliated, so he stormed into school and attacked me.

I was just a nobody with no power or connections. The principal probably thought expelling me would have no consequences.

But he hadn’t counted on Rafael stepping in.

With Rafael’s family involved, the story exploded. News outlets picked up the story.

Rafael’s family also intervened personally. The principal was going to be in deep trouble.

But through all those visits, Rafael never came. Not once.
