The Godfather’s Twenty Year Dream Was Her Chapter 04

I smiled. “Alistair, if you don’t have anything else to say, Rafael and I are heading out for lunch.”

Alistair opened his mouth, then finally snapped, “Suit yourself,” and turned away.

Once he was gone, I noticed Rafael standing stiff beside me like a statue.

I stared at him. “Aren’t we going?”

Rafael jolted back to reality, grinning from ear to ear. “Yeah. Yeah, let’s go.”

We took a couple steps, and I couldn’t help pointing it out. “Your arms and legs are totally out of sync.”

How could this future mafia don look so clueless right now? How had he end up becoming the youngest don ever?

It was lunch rush, and the school was packed.

With his long stride, Rafael naturally pulled ahead.

Every so often he’d swing an imaginary hockey stick, glance back at me casually after each jump, practically screaming “Look how cool I am.”

Just a teenage boy trying to impress.

I thought of Don Rafael, years later.

Calm. Understated. Lonely.

What happened over the years to turn this goofy, happy puppy into such a brooding man?

I asked him out loud. “Rafael, have you ever thought what kind of woman you’d marry someday?”

He froze mid-step, then looked at me, his expression turning serious. “Testing me already? Is this a trick question? What’s the right answer here—you?”

I cringed. “That’s not what I meant.”

This time Rafael didn’t joke. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and thought carefully before answering. “I don’t know. But it’ll be someone I love.”

I believed that.

After all, even after my divorce in my past life, he’d never gotten married.

I wondered what kind of woman he was waiting for.

The topic embarrassed him, and he quickly changed the subject. “Which cafeteria? I saw Alistair heading west. Should we go there too?”

I was confused. “Why follow him?”

“Aren’t you dating me just to get back at him?”

“What?”

“I heard about the debate team fight. You and Alistair are on bad terms lately.”

Then it hit me. “So you think I said yes to your confession just to get a rise out of Alistair, using you as bait?”

Rafael didn’t answer, but his expression said it all.

I didn’t even try to correct him. Instead I asked, “If you knew that, why confess anyway? Was it only because you lost the hockey game?”

Rafael looked offended. “Hell no. Nobody makes me do shit I don’t wanna do! I confessed because I like you!”

Then he snickered. “Plus I figured I’d take my shot. Convince you to be my girlfriend. Even one day would be a win.”

His blunt honesty caught me off guard. I turned to look at Rafael properly.

The sunlight caught his hair, turning it a warm shade of brown. His round eyes held my whole reflection.

He really was handsome. The kind of handsome where you notice his face first, the money second.

I thought back to his love letter.

[Please go out with me. Even just for one day. I’m begging you.]

I’d thought it was some weird bit back then. But he’d meant every word.

Curiosity got the better of me. “If I really was only your girlfriend for a single day, what would you want to do?”

Rafael turned his head, staring straight at me.

He swallowed hard, his gaze dropping to my lips for a split second. “Kiss you.”
