The Godfather’s Last Regret: He Never Knew Her Chapter 04

I stared at Vanessa in disbelief.

Her smile got wider.

“You stayed by his side for years.”

“You stopped his father’s mistress after his mom died. You protected his inheritance.”

“So why couldn’t you keep going when he needed you most—during his cancer?”

She looked at me like she’d already won.

“You think he kept you around all these years for nothing? He hates you.”

“Hates that you saved him halfway and then gave up. Hates that your love wasn’t strong enough.”

My whole body went numb.

I realized everything had been backwards for ten years.

Vanessa walked behind me, smiling. “Mad, aren’t you? You wrote those letters. You found the best doctors when his own family gave up on him. And he thinks it was me all along.”

I stared at her. She tilted her head innocently. “You don’t think I lied and stole your credit, do you?”

She shook her head. “Damon assumed it himself. From the moment I crashed into him the day he left the hospital, he decided I was the one.”

“He said you’re boring. You could never come up with jokes that funny.”

“Only someone as bright and wild as me could heal him.”

All I felt was bitter irony. Utterly ridiculous.

No investigation. No asking.

Damon just decided Vanessa was the one who saved him.

Then Vanessa suddenly slapped herself—hard, several times—and scratched red welts all over her skin. She started screaming.

“I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have touched your dress! I’m so dirty! I’m a whore!”

Damon pushed open the door. Saw Vanessa with messy hair and torn dress.

He backhanded me across the face.

My head spun. I nearly hit the floor.

“Sophia! I’m the one who wanted out! I’m the one who called off the wedding! Come at me!”

Remembering what Vanessa just said, I almost opened my mouth to tell him the truth.

What if he felt just a little guilt?

But before I could speak, Damon cut me off.

“You insisted on going in with her because there are no cameras in the dressing room. So you could hurt her. You got what you wanted. Happy now?”

He pulled out his phone and made a call right in front of me.

“Announce to the world right now—I, Damon Rossi, am marrying Vanessa. And anyone who so much as touches her will pay.”

He looked at me. “From now on, if you disrespect my wife again, I will use the full force of the Rossi family to make you suffer.”

He took off his jacket, wrapped it around Vanessa, and walked out.

The store manager, rushed in by frantic staff, practically fell over herself apologizing.

“I’m so sorry, Miss Bianchi. I was out today and didn’t make things clear to the staff. I’ll fix this misunderstanding with your fiancé—”

She looked like she was about to cry. She thought this dress disaster had ruined my wedding. She’d be blacklisted from the entire industry.

“Don’t bother. He’s not my fiancé.”

I wasn’t about to take it out on an employee. I just said coldly, “Clean the dress. I need it in three days.”

The manager froze. “But isn’t the wedding cancelled…”

“The wedding is still on. The groom’s tuxedo needs to be altered. One size larger. My new fiancé is two inches taller.”
