The Girl Who Was His Replacement for Nine Years Finally Left Him Chapter 05

Matteo let out a cold laugh. “I’m worried that once we’re divorced, you’ll completely lose it and start harassing me and Chloe every day.”

“I won’t. Because the day after tomorrow, I’ll…”

“That’s enough!” Matteo cut me off impatiently. “There isn’t a single truthful thing that comes out of your mouth, and I don’t want to hear it. I still have to go wedding dress shopping with Chloe. You stay here.”

With that, he turned and walked away.

I stared at the empty doorway, a bitter smile spreading across my face until it almost looked like I was about to cry.

The next morning, I got dressed and put on my makeup.

I wore my formal gown.

It was my last day. I couldn’t afford for anything to go wrong.

At the family dinner, I was Matteo’s legal wife, yet Chloe was the one standing beside him, accepting everyone’s congratulations.

They looked perfect together.

Handsome and beautiful. A match made in heaven.

The glow of the crystal chandeliers fell over them, making them look like a couple still hopelessly in love.

Then came the games.

Chloe targeted me at every opportunity, sometimes openly, sometimes with carefully disguised jabs.

When I lost, the rules were simple. The loser had to slap herself ten times, then drink ten shots of hard liquor.

When I won, the rules suddenly changed.

The winner had to take off one piece of clothing. Refuse, and she had to slap herself and drink another ten shots.

“Slap.”

“Slap… slap…”

I lost count of how many times my own hand struck my face, and I couldn’t remember how many shots I forced down.

My cheek was badly swollen. My stomach felt like it was on fire, churning violently with every breath.

The entire room fell silent.

The only person still speaking was Matteo, gently soothing Chloe as she pouted and complained.

“Come on, don’t cry. Whatever rules you want, those are the rules. You don’t have to feel wronged, okay?”

I watched them coldly.

Then I tipped my head back and swallowed the last shot.

The family dinner didn’t end until well after midnight.

I spent a long time bent over the sink, throwing up.

When I finally walked out, I found Matteo waiting for me.

He looked annoyed.

“What Chloe did to you tonight was because you kidnapped her. If you’re angry, take it out on me. Don’t turn around and go after her again.”

He thought I had behaved myself tonight because I was planning to hurt Chloe.

I nodded.

“And then?”

Matteo frowned, clearly surprised by how calm I was.

“There’s something else. Chloe wants you there tomorrow at our wedding. She wants to see you there, so you have to come.”

What he didn’t know was that I wouldn’t be there tomorrow.

I was leaving.

I nodded again.

“Okay.”

I watched him walk away.

“Goodbye,” I whispered.

The day I left, I stood on the street and looked at the wedding Matteo had arranged for Chloe.

All of Ironport had been decorated with roses and balloons. Their wedding photos were everywhere, filling the streets and storefronts.

Down by the harbor, I opened a video a friend had sent me from the venue.

The decorations looked like something out of a lavish dream. It was obvious Matteo had spared no expense.

The wedding dress Chloe wore was a rare, discontinued couture design.

When I got married, I had pulled every string I could and still couldn’t get my hands on one.

I was just about to turn off my phone when a delivery driver called.

“Hello, your divorce decree has been delivered.”

I gave him an address.

“Please deliver it there. Thank you.”

Consider it my wedding gift to him.

He would be thrilled when he saw it.

My phone suddenly rang again.

Matteo.

I didn’t answer.

I blocked his number, then stood up and boarded the ocean liner.

Matteo, from now on, you’ll walk your path and I’ll walk mine.

We don’t owe each other anything anymore.

I only hope we never see each other again.
