The Girl They Ignored Got Married, Then They Regretted Everything Chapter 06

Mom snatched the butler’s phone from his hand.

Her eyes locked on the City Hall wedding photo beside the signed marriage certificate.

The familiar features belonged unmistakably to Evelyn. Her hair fell neatly behind her shoulders, just as it

always had.

Everything about her looked exactly as Mom remembered–except for the happiness in Evelyn’s smile.

Mom had never seen her smile like that before.

Evelyn had truly gotten married.

She had married a man none of them had ever met.

She had done it after that terrible fight, on the very day Chloe brought her boyfriend home.

Representatives from her husband’s family had arrived at their door carrying jewelry, lavish gifts, and half a

million dollars.

Their arrival had effortlessly shattered the illusion of a happy family that Mom and Dad had created.

The thought of that half–million–dollar check filled Mom with sudden panic.

It felt as though someone important was slowly slipping out of her life.

The relatives‘ excited congratulations struck her like one slap after another.

They laughed and celebrated around her.

“Where is Evelyn? Her husband’s family sent all these people over. Why hasn’t she come out?”

“Talk about a night–and–day difference. Evelyn’s husband sent a fortune in gifts, while the man Chloe brought

home showed up empty–handed.”

“After all the attention Richard and Diane lavished on their younger daughter, this is the guy she brings

home?”

“I heard that half million is Evelyn paying them back over a piece of watermelon. All because she ate some

of Chloe’s.”

“I heard the same thing. Even after that awful fight, Evelyn still gave them everything she believed she owed.

Richard and Diane may have spent all these years doting on the wrong daughter.”

Chloe’s face went white.

Her fingers dug painfully into Lucas’s arm as her voice began to tremble.

“Where are your gifts? Take them out!”

Lucas flushed with humiliation.

After a long silence, he stammered, “You said your parents adored you, so it wouldn’t matter if I didn’t bring

anything.”

“You said it was only Thanksgiving dinner and that no one would criticize me as long as you were here. So I

didn’t bring anything.”

Everyone’s expression immediately darkened.

Chloe shook her head.

“No. That isn’t what happened. I never said that.”

She hurried over to Grant and looked to him for help.

“Grant, say something!”

Grant finally seemed to process what was happening. His eyes widened as he shouted in disbelief.

“How is that possible? Evelyn is so ordinary–looking, and she’s always been timid and withdrawn. What kind of man would want her, especially someone from a family with that much money?”

The butler frowned.

His voice remained perfectly courteous, but every word defended Evelyn.

“Mrs. Sinclair is kind, thoughtful, and devoted to her family. Mr. Sinclair adores her, and so do his parents.”

“It has nothing to do with her appearance. They value her for who she is.”

“Because of her, Mr. Sinclair finally agreed to take over the family business so he could give Mrs. Sinclair a

home of her own.”

“Mrs. Sinclair is also an excellent cook, and she always remembers everyone’s preferences.”

Then the butler turned toward Evelyn’s mother, his expression growing serious.

“Mrs. Sinclair asked me to give you a message.”

“She said you’ve received the five hundred thousand dollars, and she considers the debt between you settled.”

He stepped back and gave her a formal nod.

“Happy Thanksgiving. We’ll be going now.”

Mom stood in the doorway and watched the butler and his staff leave.

She watched their convoy disappear from view.

It felt as though Evelyn were disappearing with them.

Suddenly, she remembered what Evelyn had been trying to tell her in the kitchen earlier that day, before Chloe

interrupted.

Had Evelyn been trying to say that she was leaving?

Mom didn’t understand what she meant by saying the debt between them was settled.

Did it mean what she feared it meant?

It couldn’t.

Mom shook her head and murmured to herself.

“That’s impossible. Evelyn loves me. She loves this family so much. She would never be able to leave us.”

But the more she spoke, the more clearly she understood the truth.

The love she had given Evelyn had always been painfully inadequate.

She had only so much time and energy. She had a job, Grant’s new business to worry about, and an entire

household to manage.

Whatever little attention she had left had always gone to Chloe.

There had simply never been enough left for Evelyn.

Mom pushed a hand through her disheveled hair and took out her phone, trying to appear calm.

She called Evelyn.

The phone rang for a long time before the call finally connected.

Mom let out a breath of relief.

“Evelyn…”

My voice came through the phone.

“Mom, did the gifts arrive?”

“They did.”

“Good Mom, I’ve repaid everything I owed you.”

The words hit Mom like a blast.

I continued before she could respond.

Let Chloe have my room I won’t need it anymore. I left all my things behind too. You can throw them away

or donate them I don’t care

“If something important comes up, you can call me.”

“Otherwise, let’s stop contacting each other.”
