For a long time afterward, Celine kept posting updates to her Instagram feed.

It was as though she really had replaced me and become this family’s perfect daughter.

Sometimes, when one of her posts happened to appear, I would like it. Most of the time, though, her updates

never showed up in my feed.

Then, after a while, the posts disappeared.

The year I got into graduate school, Liam sent me a message.

Liam: [We took her in out of kindness, and she actually tried to replace you. Mom and Dad couldn’t accept it,

so they kicked her out.]

I had not expected that, but I still did not reply.

A few years later, Mom and Dad began trying to contact me again. They checked in on me, expressed their

remorse, and apologized.

By then, work had consumed my life so completely that I barely had time to read their messages.

One day, Liam sent me another message.

Liam: [Mom broke a bone. She wants you to come home and see her.]

I sent him $15,000 and replied.

Me: [Take good care of her. Let me know if you need more.]

After reading my reply, Liam helplessly shook his head at our parents.

Mom lay in the hospital bed, her hair now streaked with gray and her face filled with grief. Dad’s eyes were slightly red too.

When I was twenty–six, I told them I was coming home for a visit.

Mom and Dad were thrilled. For days beforehand, they kept asking what I wanted to eat.

I glanced at my boyfriend beside me and named a few dishes he liked.

On the day I brought him home to formally meet them, everyone’s expression soured when they learned who he was.

It was because Evan had returned to Moonveil Pack and was even sitting at our family dinner table.

Dad was the first to object.

“You have a boyfriend and never told us? Your mother and I are absolutely against this!”

Mom glanced at Evan and tried to reason with me.

“You and Evan fell out over Celine back then, but Celine is gone now. Evan has waited for you all these years.

He’s such a good man.”

“More importantly, we know him and his family, and our two packs have always been close. If you were with

Evan, you wouldn’t have to live so far away…”

I put down my fork and looked across the table at Evan, whom I had not seen in years.

My voice remained calm.

“They don’t know what really happened back then, but you do.”

“I realized I was wrong a long time ago. After all these years, can’t we put it behind us?”

“No.”

I stood. The table was covered with food, but I had not touched a single bite.

“I only came to tell you, not to ask for your approval. If you can’t accept it, I simply won’t come back again.”

Then I took my boyfriend’s hand and left.

Dad’s furious shouts and Mom’s sobs followed us from behind.

Anger or regret–it made no difference.

They finally understood.

Once a kite breaks free of its string, it can never be brought back.
