Everyone’s expression changed instantly. Evan reacted most violently, shooting to his feet so fast that he

knocked over the glass beside him.

“How is that possible? I already-”

He cut himself off.

I looked at him and said softly, “You already switched my enrollment, didn’t you?”

Evan avoided my eyes. His mouth opened as though he wanted to defend himself, but he could not find a

convincing excuse.

He knew how badly I wanted to get away.

The front door opened. Mom and Dad were home.

Before they even reached the living room, their voices carried down the hall.

“Well? Did the acceptance letters arrive?”

The moment they walked in, their eyes landed on the Silvermoon Academy acceptance letter still raised in

my hand.

“Silvermoon Academy? Evan, is that yours? You said you hadn’t done well.”

“Your parents will be thrilled. It’s the middle of the night where they are, but I wish we could call them right

now.”

As they spoke, they carried in the gifts and began handing them out.

Liam, Celine, and Evan each received a full bundle of the newest electronics.

When it was my turn, all I got was a secondhand laptop.

“Be reasonable.”

I had heard those words so many times that I could recite every unspoken justification behind them.

Evan’s set had come from his own parents, so that made sense.

Liam needed a high–end computer for his major.

Celine had lost her family, so of course she needed extra care.

In the past, I would have felt hurt. I would have hidden somewhere to cry, then stubbornly tried to fight for the

smallest scrap of fairness.

Now, I simply accepted the basic laptop and smiled.

“Thanks, Mom and Dad, but this acceptance letter is mine.”

Their eyes widened in disbelief.

As far as they remembered, I had never brought home a report card full of top marks or enrolled in any

expensive training programs.

Naturally, they had assumed I was an average student.

It had never occurred to them that I could rank this highly.

Dad recovered first, delight lighting his eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell us sooner? What rank did you get?”

From practice exams and score projections to the official results and the final enrollment decision, all their

attention was on Celine.

They had never once asked me how I had done.

Fortunately, thinking back on it now stirred nothing in me.

“S.”

Mom finally caught up. She took the secondhand laptop from my hands and pulled me close.

“An S–rank student can’t be using a basic secondhand laptop. Come on. I’m taking you to get the newest

model!”

I froze.

Whenever I saw Mom holding Celine, I always wondered what it felt like. I imagined Mom must smell nice.

She had held me when I was little too, but it had been so long that I had forgotten.

Now, with that long–lost warmth wrapped around me, it felt as though a stranger were holding me.

I gently pulled away.

“There’s no need. As long as I can use it to do research and write papers, it’s enough.”

That had been their logic from the beginning, yet the moment I said it myself, they refused to accept it.

“You got into Silvermoon Academy. You’ve earned this. Liam and Celine both have new ones, so you should

too.”

I could not change their minds, and they practically dragged me to the mall.

Mom bought me a complete set of the newest electronics without hesitating. Dad stood nearby making a

phone call.

“Change the banner for the celebration. Add my older daughter, Rhea, and put her name first.”

They spent the rest of the day taking me from store to store, buying clothes, shoes, makeup, and everything

else I might need. By the end, our hands were full of shopping bags.

The more affection they showed me, the more bitterly ironic it felt.

This was simply Celine’s normal life.

I had to get into Silvermoon Academy to receive the same treatment.
