The doctor, a calm woman with tired eyes, 

walked in just as Andrew was screaming at me. She took one look at the baby, then at the 

frantic scene. 

“What’s going on here?” she asked, her voice cutting through the noise. 

“She tried to poison my baby!” Maria shrieked from the bed, pointing at me. “That onesie she brought gave her a rash!” 

The doctor gently examined the infant, ignoring the hysterics. She looked at the rash, then at the half–empty bottle of formula on the 

bedside table. 

“This isn’t an allergic reaction to clothing,” the doctor said, her tone firm and professional. “This is a classic formula allergy. Did you switch formulas against medical advice, Ms. Chavez?” 

Maria’s face went blank. The room fell silent. 

“The nurse specifically told you to stick to the hypoallergenic brand we provided,” the doctor continued, her gaze fixed on Maria. “This rash has absolutely nothing to do with this piece of clothing.” 

The humiliation was a physical thing. It washed 

over me, hot and suffocating. Andrew stared at me, his mouth open, the accusation dead on his lips. My mother looked at the floor, her face pale. 

It was in that moment of absolute, soul- crushing defeat that he appeared. 

He was leaning against the doorframe of the hospital room, looking like he’d just stepped off a transatlantic flight, which he had. He was taller than I remembered, broader. The rebellious slouch was gone, replaced by an easy confidence. He wore an expensive suit like it was a t–shirt and jeans. 

Caleb Lester. 

He pushed off the doorframe and walked calmly into the room. He ignored everyone else and came straight to me. 

“You okay, Gabby?” he asked softly. 

I just stared at him, unable to speak. 

He then turned to the room, his eyes scanning the scene with a cool, detached amusement. 

“So let me get this straight,” Caleb said, his voice dangerously calm. “You accuse her of poisoning a baby with a onesie, when in reality, the mother ignored a doctor’s orders? And you,” he said, his eyes locking onto Andrew, “are her fiancé?” 

Andrew, flustered, puffed out his chest. “Yes, I am. Gabby is my fiancée, and this is a private family matter.” 

Caleb laughed, a short, sharp sound. “Doesn’t look like you’re treating her like a fiancée.” 

He took a step toward Andrew. “You ever yell at her like that again, and this,” he said, and then he punched Andrew, square in the jaw. 

Andrew stumbled back, crashing into a visitor’s chair. Carol screamed. My mother gasped. 

Caleb didn’t even glance at him. He turned back to me, his expression softening. He scooped me up into his arms as if I weighed nothing. 

“Let’s get you out of here,” he said. 

And he carried me out of that hospital room, 

away from the wreckage of my old life, leaving 

a stunned silence in his wake.
