The Girl He Left Behind Chapter 13

Celeste’s words had already sparked outrage in the chat.

“Working-class people? What’s wrong with that?!”

“My parents are working class! My grandparents were farmers!”

“Ugh, what century is this? Looking down on people much?”

And my question sent the chat into overdrive.

Because nothing gets people’s attention like drama.

Celeste scowled. “Do you even know what a childhood friend means? He shares everything with me! I’m the closest person to him—after his parents!”

A classmate couldn’t hold back: “You have no boundaries!”

“Call it what it is—a homewrecker hiding behind the ‘friend’ label.”

“Pathetic. Iris, he’s not worth it!”

Okay. That was enough of Celeste’s act.

I used exhaustion as an excuse to send everyone away and ended the livestream.

Now for the leading man to make his entrance.

Celeste got here first because Evan was out of town today.

Thanks to Caspian, I had their movements down to the minute.

Evan had seen the livestream.

—

He’d called me a hundred times. Sent a hundred apology texts.

Evan finally made it back to the city by 9 PM.

He didn’t even stop to catch his breath before rushing to see me.

But he wasn’t alone. Caspian was with him.

The moment he saw me, Evan broke down sobbing.

“Iris, I swear I didn’t mean it like that. I just agreed to the plan on impulse.”

I stared at him coldly. “Did you enjoy yourself this past month?”

“I was miserable.” He dropped to his knees.

“At first, I just wanted to teach you a lesson—make you less controlling. But then I couldn’t sleep. All I saw was your face…”

“All you saw was my face—and that didn’t stop you from buying another woman breakfast.”

“I only see Celeste as a friend! If you hate her, I’ll cut her off.”

“I think you two are perfect for each other.”

“No, no.” Evan shook his head frantically. “I don’t like her at all. She’s spoiled rotten—a terrible temper. I’ve been putting up with her all these years.

“Iris, you’re the only one I want…”

“Stop! Evan Sterling, you disgust me. Can you just get out of my face?”

—

Seeing that I was unmoved, Evan turned to Caspian for help.

“Caspian, talk some sense into her. Please.”

“Me?”

“You helped cover for me—you’re responsible too! Tell her!”

Caspian didn’t respond.

He walked up to me, bent down, and pressed a soft kiss to my lips.

“Iris, the way you’re ruthless is absolutely beautiful.”
