The Genius Bride He Underestimated Chapter 07

The Genius Bride He Underestimated Chapter 07 What’s the Attitude?

Sloane stayed at the Powell family home that night.

It was the most solid, peaceful sleep she’d had in a long time.

In the morning.

Nora was in the kitchen making breakfast. She’d simmered chicken soup just for Sloane, and she’d packed her a nutritious lunch too, sealing it in an insulated container so she could take it to the office.

Last night, Sloane had told them she’d quit her job and was planning to go work for Leo as an assistant for a month.

At first, they refused. They wanted her to focus on the pregnancy and rest.

But Sloane insisted. Aside from feeling a little clumsy and heavy, she didn’t feel unwell. She could handle simple work. And she needed a change of environment, something to keep her busy—otherwise, if she did nothing, she’d just spiral and overthink.

In the end, Silas didn’t say anything more.

Sloane had wanted to help in the kitchen, but Nora wouldn’t let her.

So she stopped insisting. She sat on the couch with her phone, searching online for a Pilates class suitable for pregnant women.

She picked one and planned to find time to go ask about it.

She kept scrolling.

Suddenly, her face changed.

A post popped up.

It was a social media update.

Nine photos from a dinner gathering, shot at some private high-end club.

The poster was Ronan Hayes, someone from Jaxson’s circle. Back when she was Jaxson’s assistant, she followed his account.

The caption read: Dinner night. P.S. Another day of being forced to PDA. When do we get to attend your wedding?

Three of the photos were of Jaxson and Liora together.

In the middle one, Liora covered her cheek shyly as she nestled into Jaxson’s arms. The stunningly handsome man had one large hand on her shoulder, his gaze lowered, gentle and tender as he looked at the woman in his embrace.

The sweetness and intimacy practically spilled off the screen.

Everyone in Jaxson’s circle knew he was already legally married. But in their eyes, Sloane simply wasn’t worthy.

Ronan ’s post was very likely meant for her to see on purpose.

Sloane felt a sharp, twisting pain in her chest, so intense she could barely breathe.

She shut off her phone.

Then she stood and went out to the balcony, forcing herself to calm down, forcing herself not to care, not to think.

Her hand drifted to the curve of her belly.

Her heart sank like it was weighed down by a thousand pounds.

Once they divorced, Jaxson would definitely marry Liora right away. They would have children. He loved Liora so much—he would definitely love their children too. Then what about her child? Would her baby ever get anything called a father’s love?

“Sloane, breakfast is ready.”

Nora’s voice reached her.

Sloane pulled her thoughts back. She took a deep breath, lifted a hand to wipe the tears at the corner of her eye, then turned back into the living room and went to the bathroom.

When she came out again, she looked normal.

After breakfast.

Ezra drove Sloane to the office.

On the way.

Ezra sensed something off about her. “Sloane, what happened?”

Sloane shook her head. She didn’t want to say anything.

Ezra spoke earnestly. “Sloane, you’re pregnant. If you have something on your mind, don’t bottle it up. It’s not good for you or the baby.”

It took Sloane a long moment before she finally said, “Nothing. It’s just… Jaxson has someone else outside. I can’t fully accept it yet. But it’s fine. I’ll adjust. Brother, don’t worry.”

She said it lightly.

Ezra knew she was hurting, but he didn’t know how to comfort her. He only said, “Time will wash everything away. It’ll slowly get better.”

Sloane nodded and murmured, “Um-hm.”

At the company.

Sloane got out with the insulated container in hand. After saying goodbye to Ezra, she walked toward the office building.

Once inside.

She ran into Jaxson again.

Because Jaxson rarely lived at home, the reason she’d still kept coming to work even after being demoted was simple—she wanted to see him every day.

But these past few months at the company, she’d hardly seen him. And when she did, he was ice-cold to her.

She hadn’t expected to run into him two days in a row.

The man stepped out of his car, immaculate in a suit. Broad shoulders, narrow waist, long legs that stood out, and a deeply defined, strikingly handsome face—no matter when she saw him, he was always breathtaking. Too handsome, too commanding, too intimidating.

And yet, a man this untouchable still had a side that could be gentle and affectionate.

Sloane suddenly felt a sour ache in her chest. She lowered her eyes, stepped aside, and greeted him respectfully. “Mr. Cole.”

As always, Jaxson treated her like air. Once he noticed her, his expression only turned colder. He strode past her without stopping.

Not until he entered the CEO’s private elevator did Sloane finally come back to herself. She took the employees’ elevator upstairs.

Yesterday.

Things with Thea had turned ugly. Today, Thea still didn’t give her a pleasant look and arranged someone to handle the handover with her.

Sloane didn’t care what kind of attitude Thea had. She only wanted to finish the handover as fast as possible and leave this place.

When the morning work was over.

Sloane looked out and saw the weather was nice. Behind the office building was an ecological park. So she carried her insulated container downstairs to eat outside—she could walk a bit and clear her head.

She took the elevator down.

When she reached the lobby, she ran straight into two people entering the building. One of them was Ronan . The man beside him stood tall with an impressive presence. He looked like a friend of Jaxson’s, but she’d never seen him before.

Sloane didn’t plan to greet them. Head lowered, she tried to keep her distance and walk toward the entrance.

But the moment Ronan came in, he saw Sloane.

Her heavy body was simply too eye-catching.

Seeing her avoid him.

Ronan strode over and blocked her path.

Sloane stopped. She lifted her gaze to him and saw the disgust on his face. “Are you blind? You don’t know to say hello?”

Back when she was Jaxson’s assistant, Ronan had always been polite to her. But now, in their eyes, she was just an ugly, fat, delusional schemer.

Sloane dropped her eyes. Her voice was flat as she said, “Mr. Hayes.”

Ronan let out a snort and sneered. “What kind of attitude is that? You really think you’re a toad that turned into a princess.”

Sloane’s fingers tightened around the insulated container. Humiliation burned through her. She turned her body to go around him and leave.

Ronan suddenly stretched out his long leg.

Sloane wasn’t prepared. She tripped and went down hard, both knees slamming onto the unforgiving floor with a dull thud. Her face turned white in an instant. Her teeth trembled from the pain. The container flew from her hands, and the chicken soup and food spilled all over.

Watching from not far away, Declan’s expression changed in shock.
