The Future Texted Me the Truth, the Exam Bell Called Me to the Lies Chapter 07

That afternoon, Soph burst into my house with red eyes.

She had completely dropped her usual weak and harmless act. She looked like a mad dog backed into a corner, staring furiously at the bright red MIT acceptance letter on my desk.

“Lila Whitaker, you played me!” Soph screamed, her voice sharp and ugly. “You said you left your last section blank! You said you’d go to the local college with us! Why did you lie?!”

Watching her fall apart gave me nothing but satisfaction.

“Why can’t I lie to you?” I looked at her coldly. “You two were allowed to lie to me in that motel bed, but I wasn’t allowed to leave myself a way out on the test?”

Soph’s face went deathly pale. She finally realized I had known everything.

With her mask ripped off, she went full crazy.

“Yes! I slept with him! So what?” Soph suddenly laughed, her eyes full of long-held jealousy and venom.

“Lila Whitaker, why do you always get to be on top? You have a good family, good grades, a pretty face. Even a guy like Ethan treated you like a queen!”

She pointed at me, spitting every word through gritted teeth. “I was jealous of you! I wanted to take away everything you cared about most!”

“You have no idea how good it felt when Ethan was on top of me but

moaning your name. I wanted the perfect princess to know what it feels like to be betrayed and stepped on!”

“I even encouraged him before the SAT to use your feelings to make you blank the test.”

“If you bombed it, your life would be ruined. You’d be stuck as a loser just like me! But why didn’t you?”

Looking at her hysterical breakdown, I only felt deep pity.

I used to treat her like my best friend. I felt sorry for her situation, shared my allowance, gave her my nicest clothes.

All that genuine care had raised nothing but a venomous snake ready to bite me at any moment.

“Soph Langford, you’re pathetic.”

“You think stealing Ethan means you won? All you got was trash I didn’t want anymore.”

“After everything you schemed and everything you gave up, all you ended up with was a man who couldn’t keep himself under control.”

“My crown stays on my head. Even if you wear my old clothes, you’re still just a thief.”

I walked to the door, opened it, and pointed outside. “Take your jealousy and your worthless man and get the hell out of my life.”

Soph trembled as she stared at me, then covered her face and ran out.

September arrived, and with it came the start of the new school year.

The local state college was packed with new students and noise.

Ethan stood at the entrance in a white shirt, holding two cups of my favorite iced drink, sweating under the hot sun as he scanned the crowd anxiously.

Even after everything that happened, he was still living in his fantasy.

He was convinced I was just throwing a tantrum and that I had applied to this school after all.

In his mind, Lila Whitaker loving Ethan Caldwell was a law of the universe. It couldn’t change.

Soph dragged her suitcase over and tugged his sleeve pitifully. “Ethan, it’s so hot. Let’s go register. Lila… she’s not coming.”

“Shut up!” Ethan shook her off angrily. “Lila hates the heat. She’s probably just stuck in traffic. I’m waiting right here.”

From eight in the morning until five in the afternoon, as the registration area was closing, the familiar figure never appeared.

Ethan finally panicked.

He called me over and over, only to be met by the cold automated message. I’d blocked his number long ago.

He abandoned his luggage and Soph, jumped in a cab, and raced to my house.
