The Five Years He Missed Chapter 15

The Five Years He Missed Chapter 15

Yes—Aidan knew my past.

Back then, once my emotions had gradually stabilized, Aidan had said to me, “I saw your name on the police academy’s website. With credentials this outstanding, you could absolutely find a good job. I can give you a recommendation.” I paused, then smiled bitterly.
“Thank you, but I’ve crossed the wrong people. No company dares to take me.” Aidan’s brow furrowed. “It’ll be alright.”

I didn’t know what he meant by those three words, but I knew Dominic’s methods well, so I could only shake my head.

That night, unable to bear the churning emotions any longer, I downed a bottle of liquor. I hadn’t expected my alcohol tolerance to be so pathetically low. I got drunk quickly. As it happened, Aidan came to check on me. I clung to him and sobbed, spilling everything—what should have been said and what shouldn’t. For the first time, Aidan wore a stunned expression, but still he took diligent care of me the whole night through.

The next day, utterly embarrassed, I tried to explain. “So you’re Dominic’s ex-wife. He kept you hidden very thoroughly,” Aidan said. That one sentence sent my emotions crashing down again, and I broke into sobs. Aidan, rarely flustered, clumsily comforted me for a long while.

“I’m sorry—I…” I was crying so hard I could barely string a sentence together, but my eyes were full of hatred. “I just… I just…” I just hated so much. Aidan stayed with me in silence, waiting until I gradually recovered.

Once I’d pulled myself together, I apologized profusely and tried to lighten the atmosphere. “So you can’t help me find a job after all. Dominic is incredibly petty—he’d retaliate against you.” Aidan’s expression turned a little strange. “It’ll be alright.” That was the second time he’d said those three words, but I didn’t take them seriously. Aidan didn’t seem short on money, but he was still just a doctor. Dominic could crush him effortlessly. Aidan blinked, and in the end, he didn’t press the matter.

My thoughts pulled back to the present. Aidan poured me a glass of water. “I told Dominic the patient needs quiet, so he’s been waiting outside this whole time. Do you want to see him?”

I didn’t want to deal with Dominic, but I also couldn’t let him keep blocking the hospital entrance. I had no choice but to nod.

Dominic rushed in almost immediately, his eyes rimmed completely red. His hand reached toward me, then drew back cautiously. “Elena—I’m sorry. I had no idea Brianna would go after you… Don’t worry—the men Brianna sent were stopped by my people. Luca’s grave is still intact.”

Hearing this, I truly let out a breath of relief. I lifted my eyes and looked at Dominic. “Mr. Gambino, please keep your wife under control. Don’t let her harm my son again.”

Dominic fell silent, his jawline pulled taut. I found it meaningless and was about to tell him to leave, when he suddenly spoke. “Brianna and I aren’t married. Leo is still young—I couldn’t let him bear the label of a bastard, so I call Brianna my wife in public.” After he finished, he looked at me with some nervousness.

I was surprised for a split second, then laughed sarcastically. “Mr. Gambino treats his own son quite well. I wonder if he ever spared a thought for Luca.”

I wasn’t sure if it was my imagination, but Dominic’s expression seemed to crumple in disappointment. He pressed his lips together.

“I’m still investigating exactly who was responsible for Luca’s death… If it truly was Brianna, I won’t let her get away with it.”
