The Family Photo That Had Four People And No Me Chapter 06

I looked at the photo Mom sent. I went back.

Standing before the front door, I typed in the code, but it displayed an error.

Just as I was about to call Mom when I heard voices inside.

“Mom, Wren definitely won’t come back to tutor me.”

Mom laughed. “Don’t worry. Wren is easy to handle.”

“Spend a few dollars to buy her a new pair of slippers, and she’ll come running back.”

“Then say some nice things. Save me the tutoring money, okay?”

“Okay.”

That night, Mom asked why I wasn’t home yet.

I had already taken my old transcript and found a tutoring job.

The pay wasn’t great, but it came with room and board.

I ignored her.

But a month later, she showed up in front of me and slapped me.

“Wren, your sister told me you’re being kept by someone. I didn’t believe it.”

“I didn’t think you really.”

I stole. Even when they knew it was a mistake, they used worry as an excuse and let me lick my own

“I don’t have a daughter like you!.”

I held my face. It took me a while to react.

They misunderstood me again.

It was always like this.

They thought I had bad grades. Even when I shoved a perfect test in their faces, they thought I

cheated.

They thought I stole. Even when they knew it was a mistake, they used worry as an excuse and let me lick my own wounds.

Now, they thought I was being kept.

Even if I said I was tutoring, they wouldn’t believe me.

I watched Mom grab my collar and cry hysterically.

Dad pointed his finger at my forehead and called me shameless.

Madison smiled and told Lily, never be like me.

Lily nodded obediently and said loudly, “Don’t worry. I won’t be like Wren.”

I laughed.

Be Like me? Like me and rank first?

More and more people gathered around.

Then my employer walked over with a frown.

Madison’s eyes lit up. She pointed at her. “Mom, that’s the one keeping Wren.”

Mom rushed over to hit her.

I couldn’t take it anymore. I pushed Mom away.

“Look carefully. She’s a woman.”

Mom froze and looked at Madison.

Madison opened her mouth. “He. He’s a man. Look at his hair.”

My employer Mrs. Carter laughed.

“Sweetie, who says a woman can’t have a buzz cut?”

Seeing it was a mistake, Mom quickly covered for herself. “Wren, then why are you staying at her place?”

I turned my head and didn’t want to answer.

Mrs. Carter said loudly, “You kicked your daughter out. She has to find somewhere to sleep.”

Dad argued back. “She ran away herself.”

Mom glared at me. “So embarrassing. You don’t live at home. You go stay with other people.”

When I heard “stay with other people,” my nose stung. I choked up.

“At least at Mrs. Carter’s place, I have my own slippers. Toothbrush. Towel.”

“Not disposable ones.”

“Mom, at home, I feel like I’m staying with other people.”

The noise around me disappeared.

Then the teacher walked over and patted my hand excitedly.

“Wren, did you check your scores?”
