Being a spy was hard. 

But it was also fun. 

Ever since I was little, I knew our family lived in The Truman 

Show. 

The reason I knew was because Mom showed me that movie. 

She said we were in a show now, and the show had tasks. She was the money–obsessed evil mom. 

Dad and I were the abused kid. 

I didn’t know what money–obsessed meant. Mom said it 

meant liking money a lot. 

I understood. 

In the future, I would give Mom lots of money. 

But I couldn’t tell Dad or anyone else, because Dad was bad at 

acting. 

We agreed that when Mom blinked, the scene would begin. 

Mom loves me a lot. 

When we’re not acting, she plays with me and coaxes me to 

sleep. 

But actually, I never told Mom that Dad is the better actor. 

The first time Mom pinched me, she painted a bruise on my 

thigh. 

When Dad bathed me, the paint came off. 

Then Dad guided me, and I couldn’t help telling him about me and Mom acting. 

Dad said he would cooperate with me and Mom, and that I shouldn’t tell Mom. 

Sometimes, I practiced acting with Dad. 

He told me Mom liked acting, so we had to act well. 

Mom being happy was the most important thing. 

So Dad and I also had a code. 

He worked very hard every day to make money. 

At night, he still came home to give Mom massages. 

Every time, he massaged her for a long time. 

One morning, I had already gotten up, but Dad was still giving 

Mom a massage. 

He said Mom was tired because she took care of me every day 

and still had to act to support the family. 

Dad said Mom suffered by following him. Our family went 

bankrupt right after she gave birth to me. 

We owed a lot of debt and had to move into a garage 

apartment. 

He said Mom marrying him was the happiest thing in his life. 

If I made Mom angry, he would ground me. 

Dad really loves Mom.

I rarely saw Dad angry. 

But when Dad’s arm was injured at Cedars–Sinai, Aunt Serena 

glared at Mom. 

She also said bad things about Mom and tried to defend Dad. 

Dad got very angry and warned her. 

“I can’t even bear to glare at Ava. Watch your eyes.” 

“And I don’t know you well. Why do you keep coming around me? You don’t need to take responsibility for the car accident. My wife left me money.” 

“Please keep your distance. I don’t want my wife to be 

unhappy.” 

Dad took the money from my backpack and paid the medical 

bills. 

I knew Mom had put it there. 

I saw Aunt Serena secretly call Dad a total idiot. 

I didn’t really like her either, because she had two faces. 

In front of Dad, she spoke softly. Behind his back, she insulted 

him. 

But she seemed to like me and always bought me food. I didn’t 

take it. 

Mom said kids shouldn’t eat too many snacks and sweets, or 

their teeth would go bad. 

After Mom’s last scene, Dad said Mom had wrapped her role. 

But I missed Mom so much. 

Dad typed on the computer every day. 

He said something of his had sold, and Mom and I would no 

longer have to live in the garage apartment. 

We could move back to the big house where Mom and Dad 

lived when they first got married. 

Dad and I secretly went to see Mom. 

Mom must have missed me a lot. She bought so much 

delicious food. It had to be for me. 

Good news. 

Mom came back. 

As soon as she came back, Dad couldn’t wait to close the door 

and say he wanted to give Mom a massage. 

They got their own room. 

I was very depressed. 

Now a nanny and driver pick me up and drop me off. 

I kind of miss when Mom and Dad used to do it. 

Oh, right. 

There’s still a stack of money in my tin box. 

I plan to use it this summer to get an acting gig in Hollywood. 

Mom says I’m amazing at acting. 

But if you ask me, Dad is the best actor. 

I guess Mom still doesn’t know.
