Maisie flinched, her tail practically tucked between her legs.

The Second Elder spoke first, his tone thick with sarcasm.

“Well, well, look who it is! The little thief who stole someone else’s scores!”

Maisie kept her head hung low, her eyes swollen and red.

Vela had always hated Maisie’s self-righteous act, and now she finally had all the ammunition she needed.

“Maisie, you got a D. That’s fine, nobody cares. But impersonating your sister? That’s just sick.”

“Poor Audra.”

“Shut up!” Maisie screamed, breaking down completely.

“Make me!” Vela laughed. “You did something utterly vile, and now you don’t want the pack talking about it?

You’ve got some nerve.”

“You–!”

Maisie burst into hysterical tears again.

The First Elder stepped forward, his expression cold as frost.

He wasn’t mocking them. He was just deeply, exhaustingly disappointed.

“Alpha, Luna, with all due respect. Audra and Maisie are both your pups. How could you treat them so

differently?”

Tears welled up in Mom’s eyes.

“I always felt like Audra owed Maisie her life all these years!”

The First Elder shook his head slowly.

“Owed her what? Audra was just a pup too. She was told from birth that she owed her littermate something.

Is that fair?”

“Ask yourselves–over all these years, who really owed whom?”

“Maisie never wore the same outfit twice. Audra’s pants were so faded they were practically see-through.”

“And her room? I’ve seen it. Size of a storage closet. No windows, no sunlight.”

“Tell me, what exactly did Audra ever take from Maisie?”

He took a long, heavy breath.

“I am resigning as First Elder. Think long and hard about that, Alpha.”

He turned and walked out. The other elders spat a few bitter words and left as well.

Silence descended upon the den.

Rafe stood alone, head bowed. Then he walked into my room.

It was so small.

Why hadn’t he noticed before?

How could he have missed all of this?

He opened the closet.

He saw the faded, threadbare clothes hanging inside.

Then it hit him–I hadn’t taken a single thing when I left. Not one piece.

Mom walked in and saw it too. She let out a whimpering sob and wept.

She thought of Maisie’s wardrobe, bursting with new designer clothes. Ten packed suitcases for a single trip.

The last time she saw me, I was standing at the door alone, carrying a single backpack and a battered

wooden box.

She collapsed into tears.

“I was wrong… Audra was living like this the whole time. I was so wrong!”

Dad stood in the doorway, lit a cigarette, and took a harsh, deep drag.

Rafe pulled out his phone and dialed my number.

He wanted to apologize, to beg me to come back.

But all he got was dead silence.

Mom and Dad tried calling too, but still no response.

Maisie dragged her feet over, bursting into tears just like she always did.

“Mom, Dad, Rafe–I don’t want to go to Community College. Make Audra drop out and retake the test so I can

go to Wolfcrest Academy, okay? I–”

“Enough!”

Rafe’s voice cracked through the den like thunder.

Maisie flinched violently. She stared at him, eyes wide.

“Rafe?”

He took a deep breath. “You either go to Community College, retake the exam on your own, or get a job. Pick

one.”

“Maisie, you’ve had it way too easy.”

He shoved past her and stormed toward his room.

Mom and Dad looked at her, then sat down at opposite ends of the couch.

Silent. Not a single word left to say.

Maisie stood there alone, weeping into the empty air.

Four years later.

I graduated from Wolfcrest Academy at the top of my class.

Alpha Wolfcrest brought me directly into his pack as his son’s personal Beta.

Well, actually… he just confessed to me. I’m about to become the Luna of the Wolfcrest Pack.

I never contacted my old family again.

We were done.

For real this time.

My wolf found where she truly belonged–and it wasn’t with them.
