The Don’s Regret: His Obedient Donna Is the Lost Heiress! Chapter 08

Alarion didn’t give up.

For the next two weeks, he showed up right on time every single day at the bottom of my villa’s drive.

He didn’t knock, didn’t yell, didn’t let the Morvane guards come near. He just stood stubbornly under that big tree, from dusk until dawn.

London winters were cold, often with a biting, freezing rain. He didn’t even carry an umbrella, just let the water soak straight through his trench coat.

Sometimes when I went down to throw out trash, he’d creep closer and hand me a cake.

“Virelle, I had this flown in from New York. It’s still fresh.”

His hands were bright red from the cold, his voice shaking with chill.

I didn’t take it. I just tossed my garbage bag into the bin.

“Alarion, don’t you think you’re being pathetic right now?”

“When I gave you my whole heart years ago, you said it got in your way.”

“Now that I don’t want you anymore, you come crawling back playing the devoted lover.”

“Who are you performing for?”

Alarion’s body locked up tight. The cake box slipped out of his hand and hit the ground, the packaging shattering into pieces.

He stared at me with red-rimmed eyes, his gaze full of despair and agony.

“Virelle, I’m not faking it. I really can’t live without you!”

He suddenly bent both knees and dropped down onto the waterlogged stone path. Dark water bloomed immediately across the knees of his suit pants.

Passersby glanced over, but his eyes were only on me.

“Virelle, just give me one more chance.

I’ll do anything you want. If you just come back, I’d give you my whole life.”

I looked at him, completely unmoved.

“I don’t want your life.”

I pulled a document out of my bag and threw it at his feet.

“Since you insist on pestering me, I’ll make it crystal clear for you.”

Alarion picked up the document with shaking hands.

It was a surgical consent form—when I terminated the pregnancy, I’d signed off to have one of my fallopian tubes removed.

I’d hemorrhaged heavily during the surgery and almost didn’t make it off the operating table.

And where was Alarion at that time? He’d left me alone on a freezing, windy overpass just to take care of Ismeria’s low blood sugar.

Alarion stared at the words on the paper, his whole body shaking.

violently.

“Th… this… What does this mean?”

He lifted his head sharply, his eyes filled with disbelieving terror.

“It means I’d rather give up my chance to be a mother than ever have anything to do with you again,” I said.

“Alarion, you didn’t just kill our baby.

“You killed the last bit of kindness I had left for you.”

Alarion didn’t say anything else. He couldn’t.

He carefully folded the document, pressed it tight against his chest into the inner pocket of his trench coat, like it was a belated death sentence.

He knelt in the rain, his shoulders shaking so hard, but he bit down hard on his lip and didn’t make a sound.

Rain ran down from his bangs, and there was no telling the rain from his tears.

He never looked up at me again.

It seemed he’d finally accepted that some things could never be undone.

I didn’t look at him again. I turned and walked through the gates of the Sanzaro estate.

No sound came from behind me.

I didn’t know how long he knelt there in the rain. But I didn’t turn back.

Not once.
