The Donna’s Lethal Goodbye Chapter 08

The Donna’s Lethal Goodbye Chapter 08

Evelyn’s POV

I received an internal notice: Cassius had bypassed the institute’s board and directly dropped a massive fifty-million-dollar donation.

His only condition for releasing the funds was a specific demand: the lead toxicology researcher must personally and privately host him for a tour of the core lab.

That person was me.

Two years ago, I probably would have panicked, packed my bags, and fled the city overnight.

But the Donna who cowered in the shadows of the Moretti family died the day I left Cassius.

I wasn’t going to run anymore.

Ten minutes later, Cassius walked in.

The moment his eyes locked onto mine, Cassius stopped breathing.

A starving, feral light surged into his eyes.

“Evie.’

His voice was guttural, as if he had swallowed broken glass. He lunged two steps forward, instinctively reaching for my face.

I took a half-step back.

Cassius’s hand froze in mid-air.

Keeping my hands casually tucked in my lab coat pockets, I spoke without a single waver in my voice. “Our divorce agreement is already

in effect, Mr. Moretti.”

Cassius’s jaw clenched hard.

“I never signed it!”

“Don’t do this to me. I swear to God, Evie, Selena means nothing! I can explain everything-

“Be at the usual spot wearing that black set from last time, and make sure your legs are open, waiting for me.

The perfectly accented Corsican slipped effortlessly from my lips.

“I heard every single word you exchanged at our anniversary dinner. I listened to every sweet lie and watched your flawless, Oscar-worthy

performance.”

“You thought you could keep a pure Donna on a pedestal, then turn around and roll in the dirt with a breeding canary. Your arrogance made you believe you were entitled to both.”

‘I was a fool!” Cassius’s sanity completely shattered. The mafia Don who terrified the North American underworld now looked as terrified as a prisoner on death row. “But I needed an heir! I was just playing around, I never wanted a divorce! I swore I would never leave you!”

“An heir,’ I let out a soft, hollow laugh. “Cassius, I was pregnant back then, too.”

Cassius staggered backward as if he’d been shot point-blank. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

“But on my third day away from the estate, I miscarried.” I kept my eyes on his. “The extreme grief, combined with the physical toll of fleeing in the middle of the night to escape you, killed the child.”

“You didn’t deserve to be that child’s father.”

Cassius’s knees hit the floor hard.

He broke. Grasping the hem of my lab coat, he buried his face near my knees, a desperate, dying sound tearing from his throat.

I’ll kill her myself… I’ll kill Selena today! I’ll drown the bastard! I’ll burn the entire Moretti estate to ashes for you! I’ll give you the throne to the empire! Please-you can torture me for the rest of my life, just let me stay by your side. Let me make it up to you!”

I looked down at the man I had once been willing to die for.

I leaned down and pried his fingers off my coat, one by one.

“Cassius, I don’t want your throne. I just want a world without you in it.”

I turned my back and walked toward the door.

‘I don’t hate you anymore, Cassius. Because hate means we’re still tied together. Hate would only bind me to you again.”

‘From now on, whether you live or die… it has absolutely nothing to do with me.”

I stepped out into the corridor. The heavy door clicked shut behind me, sealing him inside a hell where he’d lost everything.

I didn’t look back.

The Moretti Estate was deadly silent, like a massive tomb.

Cassius sat in the pitch-black study.

Dead center on his massive mahogany desk lay the absolute transfer of power, stamped with the family blood seal. He had dismissed all his loyal men, handing over full control of the syndicate-along with billions in offshore funds-to his uncle.

In his hand, Cassius clutched the divorce papers bearing Evelyn’s signature.

In his other hand, he held a heavy pistol.

‘I will never betray you.”

“Then let me spend every second of the rest of my life suffering the agony of losing you.”

The old vows wrapped around his throat like vipers. But the loudest voice echoing in his skull was the one Evelyn had left him with this

afternoon.

“Whether you live or die, it has absolutely nothing to do with me.”

She simply didn’t care anymore.

Cassius slowly raised his right hand.

The cold barrel pressed against his temple.

I accept my punishment, my Donna, he whispered into the empty darkness. Outside, thunder roared against the windows, perfectly masking the final crack of a single gunshot.
