The Donna Left, The Don Went Crazy Chapter 09

The Donna Left, The Don Went Crazy Chapter 09

When Vincent returned to the room, Ivy had already finished packing.

He glanced out the window at Alexander being dragged away and asked her, “Heartache?”

Ivy closed her suitcase, her tone as calm as if discussing the weather. “Heartache? That kind of thing died on the operating table long ago. I just feel disgusted. I don’t want to be pestered by a mad dog anymore.”

Vincent nodded with satisfaction. “Good. Sicily is too chaotic right now. That lunatic Alexander will definitely come harass you again when he wakes up. Go to Switzerland. The lakes and mountains there are good for healing.”

“I’ve made arrangements. Gabriel will pick you up in Zurich.”

Gabriel?

A name surfaced in Ivy’s mind. Gabriel, the youngest financial tycoon in Europe and a crucial partner in the Rainier family’s money laundering operations. Born into old nobility, he was a true gentleman.

Over ten hours later, the plane landed at Zurich Airport.

Just as she walked out of the tunnel, a man in a beige trench coat with an elegant demeanor approached her.

“Long time no see, my Princess.” Gabriel smiled, took her luggage, and kissed the back of her hand gentlemanly.

He was completely different from Alexander, who reeked of blood. Gabriel carried only a faint scent of pine, which felt peaceful.

“Thank you for the trouble, Gabriel.”

“The honor is mine.” He opened the car door for Ivy, his movements graceful and proper. “Since Vincent entrusted you to me, I must keep you safe. My lakeside villa is quiet; no one will disturb you.”

The car drove into a private estate by Lake Lucerne. There were no high walls or iron fences here, only blooming tulips and the shimmering lake surface.

Gabriel gave her the master bedroom, the room with the best view.

“This is your sanctuary.” He stood on the terrace, pointing to the distant snow-capped mountains. “Here, you don’t need to be the indestructible donna. You just need to be yourself.”

Ivy looked at his gentle profile, and the nerves that had been taut for a month finally relaxed.

To prevent Ivy from thinking about those unhappy things, Gabriel cleared his schedule to accompany her.

He took her skiing in the Alps, feeding swans on Lake Geneva, and even cooked meals for her personally that rivaled Michelin- starred restaurants.

He never crossed the line, yet he was everywhere.

This was probably the “better choice” Vincent had spoken of.

In the secluded manor in Zurich, time flew by.

On a weekend evening, Gabriel hosted a small bonfire party by the lake. Just the two of them.

The flames danced, reflecting on the shimmering water.

Ivy had drunk quite a bit of whiskey. The alcohol numbed her reason, and the grievances she had suppressed for so long surged up with the booze.

She leaned on Gabriel’s broad shoulder, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face.

“Gabriel… I don’t understand…”

“I changed my name for him, I took a bullet for him, I learned to be a qualified Donna for him… I gave everything, so why did I get betrayal in return?”

“Was I not good enough? Was I too domineering?”

Gabriel didn’t speak; he just gently patted her back, soothing her like a child.

He took the glass from her hand and wiped the tear tracks from her face with a handkerchief.

In the firelight, his amber eyes looked at her intently, as if she were the only treasure in the world.

“It’s not that you weren’t good enough, Ivy.”

His voice was deep and steady, radiating a reassuring strength.

“It was the blind fisherman who mistook a pearl for a fish eye.”

“You deserve better. Like… a knight who knows how to hold you in the palm of his hand, not one who lets you take bullets.”

Ivy looked at him with drunken, hazy eyes, her heart skipping a beat.

He lowered his head and planted a restrained kiss on her forehead.

“Sleep. When you wake up tomorrow, it will be a new day.”

That night, Ivy had no nightmares.

Alexander lay in the hospital for a full month.

Before his wounds had fully healed, he ripped out his IVs and searched the world for Ivy.

That bastard Vincent had deliberately blocked information and even released hundreds of false leads. Alexander circled South America, Southeast Asia, and even Antarctica before finally tracking down exit and entry records for Switzerland.

On the streets of Zurich, the sunlight was blinding.

Alexander stood on a street corner, looking at the perfect couple not far away.

Ivy was wearing a white dress, holding a bouquet of lisianthus, her smile more beautiful than the flowers. The man beside her was lowering his head to fix her hair, which had been blown by the wind, his eyes so gentle it drove Alexander mad with jealousy.

It was Gabriel. That famous hypocrite.

Rage instantly incinerated his reason.

Alexander charged forward and blocked their path.

“Ivy!” His voice was hoarse, like a ghoul crawling out of hell. “Come back with me! The family can’t do without you, and neither can I!”

Gabriel instinctively shielded Ivy behind him, looking at Alexander coldly. “Mr. Alexander, I don’t believe Ivy wants to see you.”

“Fuck off! This is between husband and wife!”

Alexander tried to grab Ivy’s hand, but she coldly avoided him.

She stepped out from behind Gabriel, her eyes devoid of warmth, filled only with deep mockery.

“Go back? Back to where? To that cage full of lies and betrayal?”

“Alexander, stop acting like the devoted lover. Don’t you find yourself disgusting?”

Alexander explained desperately, “Ivy, I really know I was wrong! I admit I was deceived by Elena back then, but I swear, in my heart, there was only you!”

“Deceived? Or did you just go with the flow?”

Ivy sneered, her smile sharp as a scalpel, cutting straight into his chest.

“Were you really just tricked? Alexander, ask your own heart.”

“When Elena set me up, was there a part of you deep down that was secretly pleased? Did you think that compared to a strong donna like me–who could stand shoulder to shoulder with you or even outshine you-it wouldn’t be so bad to swap for a fool like Elena who would just cry and beg for your protection, satisfying your macho vanity?”

“Do you miss me as a person, or do you miss my unconditional loyalty and usefulness?”

Alexander’s face turned deathly pale instantly. He stood frozen, as if struck by lightning.

He opened his mouth to refute her, but couldn’t make a sound.

Because in that moment, he couldn’t deny it.

During those days when Elena fawned over him, he had indeed enjoyed being worshipped like a “god,” without having to face Ivy’s eyes that always seemed to see through everything.

Ivy looked at his speechless form, and the last spark of light in her eyes extinguished.

“See, you can’t even lie to yourself.”

She took Gabriel’s arm and walked away without looking back.

“Let’s go, Gabriel. The air is dirty here.”
