The Day the Tragic Heroine Chose Herself Chapter 09

The Day the Tragic Heroine Chose Herself Chapter 09

When I opened my eyes, I was back. For good this time.

No system voice. No mission prompts. Just silence. The kind that felt like learning how to breathe

again.

The day I left the hospital, Mom unlocked an old wooden box and pulled out a notebook/The pages

had gone yellow with age.

“Sweetheart, I want you to see this. Everyone in this notebook helped keep you alive”

I opened it. Names and amounts filled every page, crammed from edge to edge.

Thousands from some. A few hundred from others. Some people gave as little as ten bucks.

Mom’s eyes welled up.

you.

“We ran out of money years ago. Every cent on these pages came from the people who love Relatives, friends, your former teachers, even classmates. Without them, we never would have

made it.”

I ran my fingers over the names. Some I recognized. Some I didn’t. Every single one made my chest ache with something I hadn’t felt in a long time. Gratitude.

That other world had been full of drama and cruelty. This was what mattered. Real people, giving what little they had, because they cared. This was the life worth fighting for.

With the seven hundred million dollars, I paid back every debt. Then I tracked down every person in

that notebook and repaid them double what they’d given us.

After that, I took my mom and dad around the world.

Watching them smile again, really smile, for the first time in years, the last of that old darkness inside me finally let go.

Years later, I met someone. A quiet, gentle man.

He didn’t know about any of it. He just loved the person standing in front of him. Healthy. At peace.

We got married. Built a life that was small and steady and completely ours.

And then came the twins. A boy and a girl.

The boy came into the world screaming. A full, furious cry that filled the entire room.

The nurse brought him over, grinning. “This little guy’s got a serious set of lungs on him.”

I smiled, exhausted and happy. Then my gaze drifted to his back, and everything stopped.

There, just above his tailbone, was a small dark red birthmark.

The shape of it. I’d seen it before. The pendant. My mom’s pendant from my other life.

I gathered both of them into my arms, these tiny, warm, brand-new little lives. My eyes blurred before I could stop it.

I knew. The little boy who’d promised to be better had found his way back to me.
