The Day I Stopped Holding This Family Together Chapter 15: What Ryker Never Said to Cade
He was in the corner booth. One black Americano in front of him. An empty space across from him.
He looked up when I walked in. He didn’t smile. He just nodded at the seat across from him.
“I didn’t order yours,” he said. “I didn’t know what you wanted.”
I sat down.
In six years, Cade had never once asked what I wanted to drink. He had always ordered a second of his own — black drip — because it was easier on the barista.
Ryker had left the space empty.
I ordered an oat milk cortado. He filed the order away in his face — I could see it happen — like a man making a note he intended to remember.
“You went to Nadia.”
“How did you—”
“I know what’s in your calendar. You haven’t changed your shared work calendar yet.”
“Should I?”
“Probably.”
The cortado arrived. I wrapped my hands around the cup. It was the exact right temperature.
“Ryker.”
“Yeah.”
“Two years ago. The Tahoe trip. The thing Cade said about me being suffocating. Did you know?”
He went still.
“I had a suspicion.”
“A suspicion.”
“I saw him talking to a woman at a holiday party. The body language was off. They were in a crowded room. I had no proof and I had no business bringing suspicion to another man’s wife.”
“And later?”
“Later it stopped being a suspicion. But by then you were sick — Theo had told me about the IVF — and the firm was in the middle of the Miller acquisition and you were carrying both. Telling you that month would have destroyed you in a way I was not willing to be responsible for.”
“So you waited.”
“I waited for the day I saw a suitcase.”
I looked at him.
“That’s a long time to wait for a woman who’s married to your business partner.”
“You are not just my business partner’s wife, Sienna.”
The cortado was very hot in my hands.
“What am I.”
“You are the person I have been writing private memos to for six years and never sending.”
A silence.
“Show me one,” I said.
He pulled out his phone. He scrolled. He turned it toward me.
A draft email, dated April 2022. Subject line: *Sienna.*
I read the first line. *I don’t know how to say this so I’m just going to draft it and not send it.*
I read the second line. *I have spent two hours in a meeting watching your husband take credit for an operational restructure you sent him in a Google Doc at 2 AM. He didn’t read it before the meeting. He couldn’t answer the follow-up question. I answered for him. I am tired of saving him from the consequences of taking you for granted.*
I closed the email.
There was a folder. *DRAFTS — DO NOT SEND.* It had eighty-four items.
I gave him the phone back.
“Why didn’t you ever send any of them,” I said.
“Because if I had sent one, you would have left him for the wrong reason. And whatever you decided to do after that — for yourself, for Theo, for your career — would have been overshadowed by the fact that you had left him for me. You had to leave him because he was not enough. Not because someone else was waiting.”
I looked at the table.
“And now.”
“And now you have left him.”
“So you’ll send them.”
“No. I’m deleting them tonight.”
I looked up.
“Why.”
“Because they were written for a woman who didn’t have a name yet. You have a name now. I’d rather start from there.”
I sat in that booth across from a man I had known professionally for six years, and I understood for the first time what people meant when they said the floor dropped out from under them.
My phone buzzed.
*Cade: That money is what I owe you. Don’t pretend it’s something else.*
I flipped the phone face down. I didn’t show Ryker. I didn’t say anything.
But he saw the motion. His eyes flickered to my phone, then back to me. He didn’t ask. He just slid his own Americano a few inches to the side, clearing the table between us, like he was making more room for me to think.
It was a tiny thing.
It was the biggest thing anyone had done for me in six years.
